Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

I dragged the garden once more for good measure. Got the corn and planter ready and then it started to rain. we got 6/10 of an inch.
not good for planting, but good for the raised beds

we have not been leaving any food outside at night. last night I did not see the motion light go on. I hope the coons went down to the river to eat clams.
They were checking to see if you got your sweet corn planted. :D:D:D

I went out looked for planter skip and found few places. Filled it all in today

I highly recommend Electric fencing to protect your flock. We have had no predator problems outside of an occasional hawk. A little bit of a cost up front, but totally worth it. The flexibility to move the fencing is such a bonus too.

another rainy day forecasted
I wonder if I will ever get the corn planted when it rains every other day.
My brother is coming today. he is going to help me get the tiller out of the lean to. I have not told him so, yet.
Annie is going to help me plant corn. I have not told he so, yet.
I am going to trim the lower branches off of the maple tree next to the garden. I have a couple of lawn chairs to set under it to sit in the shade,.
I work five minutes and sit for ten.
I can cram a one hour job into a whole day.
however, the raised beds are growing just great.
the beans that sprouted on Wednesday had true leaves on them on Thursday.

We finally planted three tomato plants in pots on our deck. Maybe they won't get blight there. We also planted four green peppers in the half barrels where we used to plant tomatoes in the garden.

That's it! We chose not to do anything else in the garden. We forgot to pick up a packet of Kale, though, for the chickens, so we'll throw some of that around in the next few days. I like to freeze corn, but we can get it from a farmer around here cheap enough or free. One of them gives us corn seed as it is but we said no thanks this year. Too busy.

I trim the bottom of the leaves off of the tomatoes
as they grow taller. I try to have about 8" of bare stem at ground level. i trim any leaves that tend to come in contact with the soil.
My brother came yesterday and helped me drag the big tiller out of the lean to. as luck would have it, I just emptied the last of the gas into the tractor. I decided that if I can't get the tiller started, I am not going to plant corn. It rains about every other day and I can't work the soil loose enough with the tractor.
on the bright side, all of the raised beds are doing great,. over half of the beans came up and most of the beets are about an inch tall.
speaking of rain, it just started pouring hard on the metal roof. 6:52 AM
Looks like a day of rest/,

Everything is growing fine, except for the beets. sprayed weed killer on the gravel near the tub. whoops:barnie
Finaly, a use for kale :wee
Kale is their favorite and it grows like a weed. It's supposed to be an annual but does come up a second year if you let it. It gets all gangly though with thick stalks. Really weird, but we've still used it.

The cost for the electric fence isn't an issue bl4.
The cooper hawks here in the woods would pick
off the whole flock, one at a time. They sit up in
the trees and plop down on a bird when it's to
their liking. They are brazening enough to just sit
and watch you walk away and then attack.
My new peeps in the brooder are doing great!
Looks like 10 rainbow layers and 3 cuckoo Marans.

Stay Safe ... bigz
