Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

bought two more tubs. going to try to get some lettuce and carrots to grow. i stole six buckets of black dirt from DD. might have to steal some more. depends on how much rotted wood chips i can get off of the wood chip pile.
i paid too much for the tubs. but i can sell them as planters after i am through with them.

64F and looking like rain.
yesterday i planted the carrots in one of the tubs.
I made a "salt shaker" out of a deli plastic container . put about 1 1/2 cups of corn meal in it and added the whole pkt of carrot seeds. it worked like a charm. did you know that corn is a good fertilizer ?
today I hope to get the bib lettuce planted.
thinking i will take one of the rain barrels and making it portable. then i can haul water to the corn if needed.
the tractor, Ollie, is running great. haven't gotten the bill from the fixit guy yet. holding my breathe.

a third of the way through July already.
all of my raised beds are doing great.
the apple and plum trees are loaded with fruit
yesterday i took Ollie and rolled the wood chip pile over real well. i was pleased at how well decomposed it is. nice black, soft dirt. i figure there are more than 2o cu yds of it. probably a life time supply for me.
it appears that the skunks and coons have moved on. we make sure there is nothing for them to eat.
i planted the carrots and lettuce. all done planting now. well, i might plant some radishes after the peas are done.
i hope all of your projects are going along smoothly

second planting of corn is not emerging yet.
might be a little soon, though.
yesterday morning i watered everything real well.
last night it rained very hard. that's OK. the beds all have very good drainage. and, i won't have to water today.
my green pepper plants look more like jungle brush.
very tall and huge leaves.
the baby jalapeno plants have finally decided to become more like adults. they have lots of blossoms

the zoo continues. one of the skunks came back.
when he saw me he dove into the wood chuck's hole. Annie sprayed pest control all over the hole and around it. for a few days we didn't see our pets.
then last night we found out that wood chucks are nocturnal. he was pushing on the garage door. i assume he could smell the cat's food. well, mr. chucky, i will give you some cat food....
yesterday both the bib lettuce and carrots peeked out of the ground. i planted the short variety of carrots. not the fat stubby kind. these are supposed to be like Nante's, only 4 to 6 inches long.
the second seeding of corn has not sprouted. i think i will give up on it, . will drag the corn patch and plant Daicon radishes. i am looking for a small amount of winter wheat. the feed mill sells only 50 lb bags,. $ 70.oo . i need just about one pound.
5 feed mills have shut down that were within a short drive for me.
8 miles to town. only 2 dairy farms left. one very small beef operation.
2 places that sell sweet corn.
1 commercial type dairy farm. over 1ooo cows.
lots of housed going up.

good taco tuesday 58F
i gave up on planting sweet corn. the second planting didn't come up either. yesterday i picked up all the tools and got the plot ready to drag the weeds down. naturally, just about when i got done, it stared to sprinkle. never did rain too hard, just kept on sprinkling. kept it up for a couple of hours until it got dark out.
today i am going to drag. i don't care if it is a little wet. as long as the tires don't spin, i am going to knock down some weeds. after doing that for several times for the next few weeks, i am going to plant oats and tillage radishes for a cover crop,.
try to get it ready for next year.
still haven't caught whatever is tripping the motion light at midnight. trap was set off and all the apple pieces were gone. so last night i set the smallest box trap. see how that goes.
the late planted carrots and bib lettuce are coming up nicely. i hope they make it. so far the deer haven't bothered the raised beds. although they are sleeping in the front yard.

Can you get a trail cam or camera to watch it for you?
