GO PACKERS! I'm out in CA. now (since Jan. 1990), but you know how it is - once a Packer-Backer...! Unfortunately, we don't get many of the games - have to have the football channel. So we go to the bar that has it, but that's not so easy for the early (10am) games! Anywhooo Sure looking foreward to this next game!

Ditto on the welcome! It seems that I'm not alone on the first year with chickens. This web site has been invaluable! Seems like a lot of people I've talked to enlarged their gardens or started one this year. Gee I wonder why? I had a 10 by 10 and put in another 20 by 20. Glad I got the chickens and added the garden. But it really cut into my sittin around time this summer. HA! But it did cut into our goin up north time and that's not a good thing. Only twice instead of around 6. That time was replaced by all the work plus all the time we got to spend with the girls. Next year will be better. Bigzio: heading to the flatlands for the reunion on the 10th of July next summer. Going to have to take a lot of pics and a notebook. Looking forward to a home cooked catfish dinner after one has given it's life to me.

Well we will just have to see how they do. Hopefully good. Good luck to the Packer's! I have to hang my head in shame because I haven't really watched a game this year so far, but I'll try this week.
We planted a garden this summer too and had high hopes for it.... Well next year I don't think I'll be planting a garden. I don't have green thumbs.

Glad you stopped by. Go ahead and visit often. The more the merrier....

The extreme cold can be hard on single comb breeds. Chickens with pea, rose, walnut, or strawberry will be less likely to obtain frostbite from extreme cold. The cold winters end up being additional work making sure the flock never runs out of fresh water, and has plenty of dry bedding. The draft free coop is a must.

Glad you stopped by britt...the next packer game should be a nail biter. Glad the vikes lost last week. Hopefully we can give them another loss. I hope Brett gets sacked at Lambeau Field!

And yes, I too hope Brett gets his cummins. Obviously, we don't want to go there!

bigzio- So my cochins will have a harder time this winter, being single combed? Why is that? I have the air-tight coop, not worried about that, and check on the fresh water. Thanks for the welcome and help. I'm actually nervous about winter. I didn't think I would get so attached to this chickens so much!

beckyschicks, a word about gardens. I consider myself a decent gardener; we put in a large garden at our new home this summer and didn't get a whole lot out of it. I think it was a combo of cold weather and nonfertile soil. It takes a few seasons of hardcore fertilizing to get garden soil where it needs to be to grow great veggies. Don't give up just yet! Take your chicken manure and fall leaves to the garden - your next efforts will be better.
