Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

Becky, its the rules that you post a pic of your new addition. Congrats on saving Tucker!

Yes, babylady, you are allowed, lol!

Bigzio, I am planning my seed list right now. The hardest part is whittling it down from the 700 varieties I want to a manageable number. I was able to save a good number of seeds from last year, so that will help save money. I want to try growing mangels, they are supposed to be a good livestock crop, easy and productive. Haven't ordered seeds from Sandhill, although I will be putting in my very first chick order with them this year

Good Morning...
Wow, I can't hardly believe that it's Friday already...

Where did the week go? Way to go babylady4! Visions of the big paycheck are in your dreams, eh! Hopefull all the BS will payoff for you....

amyable, what breeds of chicks are you ordering? I noticed they no longer offer lt brahmas. I think they had breeding problems with them. I was going to call them to find out if they are eliminating them completely. I do have another source for them though...as well as the black javas I have to have.

I saved alot of seeds too. I'm going to try amaranth this year. It has a ton of nutrition, and can be used a number of different ways. Here is a link to explain it somewhat. It can also be ground like flour, and used for pancakes .

sandhill had a lot of problems with the cold weather we had last jan. he lost a lot of birds, including the mahogany faverolles, that's why there is a lot of breeds out this year

Well- Memorial Day weekend is out. Should we just go down the line? How's the first weekend in June sound? Can anyone make it then?

I'm getting sick of the clouds though. Cloudy. Cloudy. Cloudy. With the snowmobile trails closed, I hate to say it, but I am starting to wish for spring.

Only got to go out on them once this year.

And now rain coming again.

Babylady4, how long were your CNA classes? When I took them way back when, let's see, 15 years ago, it only took 2 weeks. But I worked at that nursing home for 3 years, but you only had a contract for a year. I was training as a treatment nurse assistant AND worked in the therepy dept and a CNA and training people and teaching in inservices. But those classes carried over to when I worked in hime heath too. Saved me from taking months of more classes and repeats. 10 years of heath care was enough for me. Nursing and management.

I loved the job, but hated the way people got treated. I love spending time with my patients. Not rush, rush, rush. Do this. Do that. Punch in. Punch out. No. You can learn so much from the older folks.

I'm looking at where I'm going to get babies from too. Let us all know where you guys are getting babies and how it all turns out.

Bigzio, I've been talking to Jim and he's looking around for me. Maybe he'll be able to come across something. Thanks for contacting him for me.

Bigzio, let me know how it goes with the amaranth. I'd like to try sorghum some year, grow it for the birds. I am just going to go with the assortments from Sandhill this year, mostly for cost and to experiment. We'll see what I end up with and what breeds I like the best. I've read a lot but can't really decide for sure until I actually have the birds. I definitely want a good mix for a laying flock, and probably keep one breed for meat. And preserving heritage breeds is very important too.

My not-so-short list of fave breeds is
Ancona
Welsummer
Marans
Barred Holland
Ameraucana
Delaware
Faverolle
Australorp
Cochin
Wyandotte
Sussex
Langshan
and Polish just for fun
Unfortuantely every time I come on here I add a new breed to the list

Amyable; It's tough to choose. We stopped in Marshfield on our way up north last summer at the fair. Just to look at the chickens. made me wish I was rich and could have them all. Nah it would take all the fun out of it. fordmommy I was going to say something about getting sick of winter but I didn't. Think Alaska doesn't sound so bad now, but we'd prefer just a little farther north for you guys. you'd have to move to an Alaska thread. HA! First weekend in June works for us. bl4; We're rootin for ya on your clinicals and test. L says as long as you paid attention in class and did your work and paid attention to the details you'll do fine. She graduated last May and was lucky enough to get into a place here in town that takes very good care of their residents. She couldn't work in a place that doesn't. And there's a lot of them out there. Good Luck! I'm firing up the wood stove after 3 days without. I came home to a basketball sized puddle of ceosote on the floor of the back porch and it freaked me out. I talked to my good neighbor Donny last night and he said he had the same thing happen and also a friend of his. We all had it happen the same, it happened right after cleaning the chimneys. We figure it was the combination of high moisture in the air and the barometric pressure. He corrected his problem with more draft. I hate hearing the furnace kick in, it wakes me up at night. Same half a tank of fuel oil that I bought 8-9 years ago. Just checked it, smokin up the back porch, chimney is cold and doesn't want to draft. Kinda like startin an old car at -20 come on baby fire! First 5 day week in a long time looks like we're gonna be busy for awhile. The paychecks will be nice but the weekends a lot shorter. 9 eggs today only 8 the other day. I'll to do a clean out on the nest boxes tomorrow maybe that will help entice them. I'll do my first check tonight but I'm betting their all fertile. Peaches is such a good boy! And lucky in so many ways. Thanks again fordmommy! He makes me laugh every day and I like that!

I'm going to look for wyandotte too.

I LOVE my Black Australope. She is now my favorite. She was second before. Great personallity! She watches over the littler chickens it seems. Very sensitve.

I can let you know in a month or so how I like my Ameraucana and Welsummer. So far so good on the Welsummer now really. I named her "Pepper" because she looks like ground up peppercorn. She's friendly and hasn't really had much human contact. But the new BLACK Ameraucana are pretty flighty. The Whites not so much. Hopefully everyone will be happy here.

Good Evening....
amyable, I'll let everyone know how it goes with such a lost staple!

I think you've made the same decision I would of made at sand hill preservation, or anywhere else for that matter. Prices for day old peeps sure aren't what they use to be....

Seems like one needs to have a broody hen, eh!

Saving the heirloom breeds comes with a starter price, but well worth the investment in my opinion. The longevity of the breeds, and the preservation of something worth saving. is why we do this, eh!

Once the foundation breeds are lost....they are lost forever!

Composite breeds can be re-created, if the foundation breeds are still around.

It is quite interesting as to what is a foundation breed/vs a composite breed.

We really need to save the breeds in danger of being lost forever.

BS is my forte!

What a day! Ran ALL over the Fox Cities today trying to get a deal on scrubs and some shoes, ended up just buying new ones at Wallyworld..... on top of that I made a Ninja cake for a friend of mine (birthday party for a 7 yr old), and worked at UW-Fox cleaning out the cat morgue and the rest of the Biology lecture/lab room.

The CNA class that I took is through the Red Cross in Waupaca. The State has changed the format to 80 hours of classroom time and 32 hours of clinical experience. So; now I can add CNA and certificates in CPR, BBP, First Aid, and protecting you Back to the long list of education. I am hoping I can find employment at a hospital, preferably in the Labor Delivery area.....

You guys are all making me jealous talking about all your chickens.........
hmm.png
I would love to have some of the heritage breeds since they are so interesting and unusual.
