Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

Dr. H who says old roos like us can't learn new tricks? I thought you were an old hand at this chicken stuff but it's good to know that many of us are on the same learning curve. I'll be following closely everything that gets posted here and passing on some of the things I learn by screwing up along the way. I'm going to take before and after pics of my coop so that I can remember and I'll post up so you can see the setup.

Annarie those are some super cute ducklings!!! I'd love to have one but I think chickens are enough for now....

Fordmommy this is always a hit or miss time of year fishing wise. The river fish haven't gotten themselves sorted out yet but I hope you pop a couple today and feast tonight.

Mom has cooled down this morning and didn't smack me around so I think with the sunshine and the summerlike temps she might even let me have a few more birds....

Or not. The girls have drawn the line at 22 but wait til they see the chicken mansion I have planned. I have done gone chicken insane. Maybe medication is in order. Who knows, like I told Mom last night...raising chickens keeps me off the streets running with the pack. Not that I ever did, but still...

You got that right! The first hint I got that the fishing wasn't going to be that good was....slush still on Poygan. It's drifting up onto the shore now. It sure is pretty though. Looks like giant shushy piles.

I wonder if they come flavored.

Howdy wildabundance! Come sit a spell. If I had a pond I'd have ducks, geese and fish and if I had a barn I'd have cows and pigs. I'd never have to leave well except for beer. Hey I could make that too! Then I'd need fields for feed and wheat for bread then horses to run the mill... Think I'll just stick to chickens. BBCB I too try to learn from my mistakes, doesn't always happen but I try. Don't do too many of the same ones anymore. Upper percentile there. No old hand here I just try and pay attention. "Mom has cooled down" Just have to keep pokin that bear with a stick don't ya? I have to admit it can be fun! Now that I think of it it's a hobby of mine. Chickaholics, fowlism I dunno I'll work on a name for it. I'm trying beer as medication so far it's working. A couple of beers and ya can't drive anywhere to get more chickens. Works for me. Gotta go clean up that tiller for repairs. Hope you all find your eggs in the coop. Silly rabbit! Buck Buck Buck!

Good Afternoon to all.... special welcome to you wildabundance, consider yourself amoung friends.

Keep the questions coming. Straw is fine for bedding Dr Everett who heads the SPPA (society for the preservation of poultry Antiquities) favors straw over all beddings. I agree with him mostly, however pine shavings do work well in the brooder.

You are really lucky to have all that space...more is better for space if the birds are confined for long periods of time in the winter, crowding can cause stress which creates more problems like picking and cannibalism.

I would keep your ducks seperate from the chickens. They are messy drinkers and create a wet environment for chickens that need to have a dry place to live. Some folks raise them together, although i would never recommend that.

Nice day today. Resting the injured back...God that sucks this time of year!

Welcome back BCC, glad you had a safe trip. Me and Jim are both gonna make Wega (fordmommy you prolly already know) You can question him about the Ukokkei eggs that he is hatching for the hmoung. If you do a google, there is some info there.

Well I have the music cranked once again...enjoying everything. The doors and windows are wide open allowing the fresh air in...If this is as good as it gets...I'm fine with that!

Give a man a fish and feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and feed him for lifetime.

Have Fun... ~ bigzio

I went to the site and I see something in the afternoon, and a 4-H something the 17th in the afternoon??

IDK I would like to go and find a couple ducklings

annarie - I would love those ducklings but ur too far away, They are soooo darn cute!

Sorry the back is still hurtin Bigz been there done that so many times the calculator only goes to 8 places squared. Jams crankin windows open too! Think I got sun burned. Tiller is in excellent shape for an oldie. Changed the oil, greased the gearcase, needs a carb kit. When I was at Ace the other day I looked at some somewhat decorative fencing for the flower bed by the back door and I bent down to look at some and broke out laughing. A young man was stocking shelves about 15' away and he laughed too. Must have been contagious, then he asked what I was laughing about I told him I was trying to save the flowers this year from my chickens. The fencing was a foot high. Guess electrified chicken wire is the answer. To heck with what someone else might think of it. I tried!

Hello all! BBCB it's an addiction! I can't stop either. My other half keeps telling me no more too. Little does he know I have 6 eggs under a broodie. I'll say she must have snuck off somewhere and had them. Hehehe. Good luck with your family. Tell them that chickens keep you sane and that your doctor said to have daily doses of chicken tv. I just tell everyone when they are driving me up the wall that I'm going to go talk to my "good kids" and no else is welcome to come.

Cedar Post- How cool is it that you have seen wolves! What I wouldn't give to actually see one! Wolves are my all time favorite animal and I have loved them for as long as I can remember. A black wolf too. Very cool!!! Remember those things, someday they may not be there.

Well I started school this week. I don't like it.

Having homework again after 11years of not. I guess I'll have to adjust. Wish me luck! Loving the weather. I think I actually got sun burnt today. Well have a great evening everyone!

Man I hear you Bigz I've got chronic back problems and I can only do what my back is willing to put up with. After chainsawing in the woods for a couple of days my back is really barking. The only good thing is that I haven't actually thrown it out...once that happens, then I just have it wait it out.

It is an addiction and having a huge room now to set up a coop is like a crackhead winning the lottery. Now I want some Black Copper Marans or Barnevelders immediately!!!! Anyone got some BCMs that are newly hatched or about to be, please let me know...Mom has just thrown up her hands and said, do whatever you want. Truth is, we had all the new chickies out on the lawn today and she got bitten by the bug. So many pretty little birdies!

Hey Dr H I wish you lived by me so I could borrow your tiller, brother! I've got a 10 X 10 little garden we're putting in and the area right now is so overgrown now, yikes.

I've got pics I'm posting...so beware.
