Sorry I like to enable people's addictions.

Hope everyone had a good Mother's Day. Went to Palmyra and did the endurance run with the oldest DD. Dh and I trail rode while she ran down the trail the other way. Had fun. Came home and took a nap. It was a good day. Wonder how TerriO liked camping with this weather. Hopefully they weren't in tents. Got pretty cold the past couple of days. Last year we tried to camp on this weekend and it got down to 40 over night, in a tent, air mattress deflated, just DH and me. Was a rough night. We promised each other the next time we decide to go early camping we have a camper with a heater.
Well take care all.

hello to all

hope all the mom's got the royal spoiling they deserve yesterday ... and every day lol

ok so my hen went broodie where my duck always lays her eggs.. so last night i went to shut hte coop and the duck was where
miss fancy pants had been laying and miss fnacy pants was in one of the nesting boxes checked under her and ther were 2 eggs checked under the duck and there were the3 chicken eggs and 4 duck eggs that fancy had been sitting on
so i put the 3 chick under fancy last night and took the duck eggs so we will see what we really get now i have no clue when we will have hatch day lol the joys of broodie chickens lol

Did enough tent camping my whole life. Like the creature comforts now. The chili ended up to be a triple batch. Have to tame it down seems I got carried away with the peppers and spices. Have get the brooder box set up today also. But other than that it's going to be a mellow day. We went out to a local watering hole to watch Tuck Pence play, always a good time. Saw a lot of people that we don't normally get to see. Maybe should get out more. Have a good one! P.S. Becky your almost as mean as fm!

Hi all- Hope you all had great weekend's and Mother's Days!

I thought I had the most secure run I could have- roof covered in wire, buried wire walls.... well, a darn hawk got to one of my silkies that was huddled near the wall and killed it THROUGH the darn wire.

:he I feel terrible- I thought I had planned everything on that coop really well.

Any suggestions on how to hawk proof the lower part of the wire wall? I was thinking of putting a 3ft high clear plastic sandwiched inbetween hardwire cloth around the wall.

Meettheflockers- sorry to hear that

- what size is the opening on your wire-could you possibly use a smaller sized wire and put it over the wire that is there now for added protection? I think we used 1/2" by 1" hard wire when we did our coop.

Good Morning everyone, I hope all the Moms on here had a great Mother's Day. We had the family over to the farm and everyone got a tour of the hen house...they were all impressed and amazed with my newfound chicken skills. Everyone was surprised at how beautiful all the birds are, and I've got a real variety, so it is a colorful coop. I've got one little EE under the weather right now, she's just been kind of standing by her lonesome. I need to keep an eye on her. Hmmm.

Yesterday morning I decided to make some changes because I've had three new Ameraucaunas sitting in a kennel in the coop for going on three weeks, and a naughty GLW, all of whom needed to be integrated. The last time I tried putting these birds in with the rest they beat the tar out of the ameraucaunas and the GLW got right back to pecking everything and everyone in sight. So, I took a seat in the coop and tried to come up with some ideas...I've had the GLW confined for over two weeks, and during that time she stayed small (due to lack of exercise, I suppose) while the other chicks running around got bigger. The three Ameraucaunas are smaller too, and vulnerable. Well, I just decided to heck with it, whatever happens happens, and I put all 4 birds in the mix. Jerry Lee, my biggest rooster, and Elvis, his buddy, were all over these new birds, just wiping the coop with them. So I caged both the roos together in bird jail and the coop calmed down immediately. The hens are still establishing a pecking order, so there's a little bit of tussling going on, but nothing comparated to when the roos were out and about. Went in this morning and it looks like things got sorted out somewhat peacefully, everyone was excited that I had some fresh veggies and some scratch. The GLW, who used to be a bully, is now learning what it feels like to be chased. Good. Nothing like a little humility to make us right sized.

I don't know what to do with the confined roos yet, they are not liking confinement. Jerry Lee is now crowing up a storm and wants to be king of the hen house...I'm now thinking all the roos have got to go. It's a shame, but those roos do sure change the dynamic.

We could use some nice warm weather right about now, man I thought those cold nights were over but we've been below freezing at night for going on a week straight.

Jobwise, I've got a second interview tomorrow for a job I really want. Your prayers are accepted and appreciated. I've been doing a lot of hours at my part-time gig but the hours are sporadic and I'm too old to be working 3rd shift!

I hope everyone is well, you guys are a great bunch, if you didn't already know that.

I just went back and read your post MTF, what a bummer! So sorry. Do you have hardwire cloth along the lower part? You sure it was a hawk and not a racoon?

or an owl, I've had owls pull young birds through chicken wire, and an owl will land on the ground to kill hawk generaly will not

Hmmmm good question. It was getting dark and I saw it from a bit of a distance. It was huge and def. on the ground meticulously getting at it through the small hole in the chicken wire. When I walked towards it, it flew up onto the roof of the coop and than flew off.
It def. could have been an owl if they are big. I have heard them making noise at night recently.
