Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

Godsgrl bear with me here and let me if this helps at all.....

I copied this from the DNR website. It would apply to any freshwater body I would think.

"For the past five years, large quantities of decaying algae have been fouling Wisconsin´s Lake Michigan shoreline. As the algae and organisms trapped in the algae rot, they generate a pungent septic odor that many people confuse with sewage. Nutrient (phosphorus) sources, zebra mussels, and declining lake levels have been implicated in the recent increase in nuisance algae. The presence of rotting Cladophora on Lake Michigan beaches presents aesthetic and odor problems that impair recreational use of Lake Michigan. Cladophora is a green algae, and does not produce toxins the way blue–green algae can. Cladophora itself does not present a risk to human health. However, Cladophora rotting on a beach promotes bacterial growth. In addition, crustaceans that wash up with the algae can attract large flocks of gulls, resulting in high concentrations of fecal material and bacteria. The bacteria associated with Cladophora can pose a risk to human health."

We have high phosphorus levels in the water which would aid in the growth of the algae as well.......

Finally feeling almost 100%..... I feel like I have Malaria! It comes and goes in waves!!!

Here is the Bread and Butter Pickles receipe that I use.

25 to 30 med size pickles(1/2 dollar diameter)
8 large white onions
2 large green peppers
1/2 cup pickling salt

5 cups cider vinegar
5 cups sugar
2 Tablespoons mustard seed
1 teaspoon Turmeric(yellow powder)
1/2 teaspoon cloves

Wash pickles, slice thin, chop onion and peppers combine with pickles and salt. Let this stand for about 3 hours, the pickles, onions & peppers will sweat and after the 3 hours drain the liquid that has formed. DO NOT RINSE.

Combine vinegar, sugar & spiced in a large roaster, bring to a boil and then add pickles, onions and peppers, heat thourghly but do not boil(starts to steam before it boils)

Pack while hot into jars, seal at once and water bath for about 5 minutes.

Resist opening up for several weeks before opening, the longer they sit the better!!

Sorry, TerriO, I didn't make myself clear. It's not the lakes/rivers that have the smell, it's the TAP WATER! It's very unpleasant when showering/brushing my teeth, etc. We normally come up during summer time.

are your 'scovy's running around free range, in a yard, or a pen without a lot of natures feed (weeds, grass, frogs, mice, bugs etc...) my young 'scovy's have been running around without even a mama since they where 2 weeks old, she took care of them long enough to show them how to find food and go back and forth into the building then she abandon them. we did keep an eye on them but they didn't need it. the only thing i give them is clean water they scrounge for every thing else. but there is a feeder they can get to with out a problem, but they like to clean up under the hanging cages. My local co-op carries duck pellets, i use them for my call ducks, not so much waste. I think the brand is Prince

So, I think i'm less of a bad duck owner now. I took the duckies out to take a dip in the pool (as I got home sooner than I thought) and the water was like bath water! So, I threw a few peas in there for them and the littlest one dove and grabbed them. They seemed to really enjoy getting water over their heads and swimming. Then came time to get them in. I told DH to leave 2 in the pool, as if you leave 1 they try and escape to find their siblings. Well, he didn't listen and then we had a duck running around the yard

We tried not to chase it, but we also didn't want it going through the neighbors fence. So, ten minutes later we picked up the screaming duckling and put him back in his tub in the house. SHEESH. I just wish they'd understand "I'm not going to kill you!!" I try and leave them be most of the time, just picking them up right now to go in the pool and back in the tub. I want them to be less scared before we start holding them.

DS saw them and ran instantly to the tub and pointed and said "Duckies duckies duckies!" haha. He likes them. He'll get to hold one in a couple days, when they are less stressed!

I pulled a bunch of things out of the garden today, and I always throw them on the grass until i'm ready to collect them. Well, I got tied up and our roommate mowed the lawn. You can figure out what happened

My feed store in Mauston carries Purina Duck Grower pellets. They're awesome - I think they're 16% protein (?), they have a faint molasses smell to them, and the ducks LOVE them. When I bought my Calls a few weeks ago, duckluck told me that's what she feeds all her Calls too. You could probably get it at ANY feed place that carries Purina. Their website has a dealer search.
