H&R you gotta home made 'bator too. gotta love the home made 'bators! I know I do! congrats on the new babies
Drh I got lots of trees that need to come down, just dont know how to do it with out taking the house down too.
the nerve of some people.... I just spent the good part of my morning reporting someone on facebook. they are bashing our family! one because my cousin is pregnant again and her baby is 7 months. ?! go figure right? I hate people who are stupid. and he's doing all this under someone elses name. ARG!!!
just to cause ripples (again) he keeps saying stupid things just to ruffle our feathers!
had to say that to my BYC friends!
ok what to have for supper? nachos.... tacos? you people are making me hungry.
TO even if I do dig a pond, I cant possible get MORE skeeters!? I got millions already!
ducks are loving free roam, their pool is still kind of clean. they have been everywhere and spending less time in the pool. which may I remind everyone that they have a "POOL" and not an "OOL"
an "ool" is a pool with out "P" (pee)
I made a pool sign for my mom and dad's pool that says Welcome to our *ool, notice there is no "p" in it, lets keep it that way! gotta love it!!!
have a good day, I gotta run get feed.
yes it has been doing a great job- we are now with 6 chicks hatched! Of course the Irish Setter is trying to inch her way closer to it ..... it holds her attention like nothing else does.
Had a temp drop and the humity is at 70% but now the temp stablized.
It's our Juneau County Fair this week....took all the kids projects in this morning and stopped to look at all the birds. We could have kicked butt and gotten all the blue ribbons, but I don't like the set-up they have (the barns are always SO hot, and all the birds look miserable), so I didn't let the kids enter any. After seeing the competition, they're really disappointed!
But, look what was in the sale barn!
Momma Blue Cochin (a pretty nice specimen too) with 3 or 4 Blue chicks, 3 Splash chicks, and 1 Black chick! Now, not everything in that barn is for sale - some of the exotic and baby animal exhibits are in there too, and there was no sign on the cage, so I left a note with my name and phone number because I want the Splash chicks (and my youngest sister wants the Black chick - says she's going to call it "Moon" and handle it every day
). Hoping for a call back - and I've been stalking the barn, hoping to run into the owner.
OOOO anniarie you know how I like the blues. I'll go halves with you.
Well I'll start with the good news of the day, the two other eggs hatched and I now have 5 chicks! To me that's a great hatch rate, 5 out of 6. Can't complain. On a sad note, last night I went into the barn and my quail's door was open(they are in a old rabbit hutch that's 4 ft off the ground) I paniced, counted everyone and they were all still there. Then I yelled at myself for leaving the door open, I know it wasn't the kids they can reach the latches that are about 5ft off the ground or more. Today when I got home, I went to go check on momma and babies, because the two weren't orginal and I was worried she would reject them, and there was a rat in the quail cage! I of course panic. It had the quail in it's mouth. I called DH and he can flying home, told me to get the 22. He unfortunately couldn't get a shot and the rat went back under the tack room. I have a trap set and patched the hole that I thought maybe it got in through. Then broke down. I feel so horrible, the others must have been so scared. They are all flighty now and scared looking and I was finally making progress with them. I'm also mad that I freacked out, that's so not me but rodents scare the you know what out of me. I have to catch it because once it's egg supply runs out it will go after my chicks or chickens. DH saw what a rat does to a chicken when he was little and says it's not pretty. Now I know were all my eggs are going too. I'm also going to set up a shoe box, duct taped shut with poison in it. Also it was probably the rat that opened the door, I watched a program that says they can open most anything, including a fridge.
What a sad day I think I'll just go back to bed.
Oh, beckyschicks, rodents scare the crap out of me too! I'm fine with spiders, snakes, coyotes - none of them scare me, but a rat would probably give me a heart attack. It's the beady eyes and the bald tails. *shudder* I hope you kill it!
If those chicks are for sale at a reasonable price, I think I'll just buy them all (they're really nice - you should have seen the Cochins that were actually being shown - they didn't even look like Cochins!). And then you guys can have the Blues I don't want.
I don't think they'll be released until 5 p.m. on Sunday though.
They have a little miniature donkey for sale too, it's the first time he's been away from momma, and there's a sign that says, "I don't have mange - it's the first time I've been away from mom, and I rubbed my eyebrows off because I'm nervous.".
Poor thing rubbed his little forehead bald! Gosh, I wanted to bring him home too!
We used to have a mini-donkey named "Doc" - he was the most ornery thing that ever lived, gave me a few nice green bruises when he kicked, but he was so neat to have around.
Annarie those are pretty birds, good luck with them if your successful in getting them, I agree that the blues are pretty but we are just hatching out some new ones! After having problems with birds dying at the begining of the year we have decided to either hatch eggs or get day olds.
Wisconsin ordinances changed, I'm gettn chickens!Hey guys, I am from Portage county Wisconsin, ordinances were just changed allowing egg-laying chickens!! Yippie! It's a great thing considering I live in the MIDDLE of the country!! Anyway don't know alot about chickens but am doing my home work. I will be asking questions on housing, food . I have a 8x10 lean-to with lattice work on the one side and a chain link pen on the front, used to be a old dog kennel. I think I will have to make some kind of boxes correct? I will be looking for a friendly chicken that will lay all winter here. I have an 8 yr. old son who will be my partner so a friendly chicken is a must, cool-looking chickens are a bonus! Also looking for info on lower cost but good feeds! Anyway I'm sure alot of this info is on the forum once I start reading. I'll have tons of questions I'm sure, but wanted to introduce myself and say HI!! Thanks, Mitch
Mitch, you've come to a good place for information on chickens and many other typics. Do you know what breeds of birds you are looking for? We have bantam cochins that are very kid friendly along with several other breeds. Our kids are into showing at fair for 4-H also, most of our chickens were hatched out this year so they still young. Our kids enjoy getting the chicks as day olds and raising them from there.
Still holding at 6 babies out and 2 pipped but working on it!
I caught it!!!! I went down there and was going to check on them and it was on the cage again.
We stared at each other for a moment and then it booked it for the corner under the tack room. I set a trap there and it must have turned to check it out and snap! The thing is about 8inches not including the tail.
Put a bucket over it and left it for DH to clean up. Didn't have the courage to pick it up and get rid of it. Hopefully that's the only one. Will set the trap again to see if I catch anything else. I'm good with anything, but mice and rats. This was my first time seeing a rat and hopefully my last. This is also my first death by something. I did call Dh and told him I caught it, he said he was proud, but you know he is just smiling at what a girl I'm beening.
Anniarie-Let me know if you get them and what one's your keeping. Then I'll make a trip down by you. How's that incubator doing, by the way.
I also have always wanted a mini. Was going to get one last year, but they are so pricey. Couldn't find anyone around here that sold them either.
Also
Wiscochiko Congrats on getting chickens. They will become addicting. I get my feed at Fleet Farm. A 50# bag is about 11 bucks. Not bad I think. I have cochins and they are very kid friendly, even my roos are good. I have one that sits on the deck with the dogs all day. I think he thinks he's one of them. They come in many colors and are good in the winter. They will lay in the winter if they have light. The only down fall is they go broody and won't lay when they are. It really depends on what you are going to do with your chickens.
Well I'm going to check on everyone. Maybe stand on my bucket and crow!
