Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

Friday Long Labor Day Weekend To All... Hope you all get a chance to enjoy life on your menu!
Placed one tree stand today in the ridge. God I love the woods so much. What a great place.
What a blessing to enjoy another season afield. I don't take any of it for granted. Me either! S

In regards to the cheesy home cheesie spuds ....here goes
One quart of tatoes rinsed well with cold water after opening (once or twice)
drain
grate in bowl and add chopped onion to size u want add one can cream of chicken OR celery soup, no water one cup of sour cream and cook in microwave till onions are tender. Tepending on the microwave...20-25min. Grate cheese in the mean time which we use sharp chedder.....apporx amount is 1/2 lb to whatever 2 your taste. Check the onions after about 12 min u can tell when they are cookin... then go from there. Maybe another 10 minutes . I usually add some cheese when the tates r just about done to stir that in then let it sit a bit and taste and go from there what u think add more cheese, any ? feel free to ask....

I just hope everyone has the best time this labor day week end...

So, I guess I'm an emotional shopper. With the loss of little Boomer, look what I bought today (I don't have them yet, this is the breeder's picture - he's bringing them to the Wisconsin International Show for me):

Anyways, I have to go get all the birds put to bed for the night!

So after a long amount of hours over the stove, I got 5 pittly pints of pasta sauce. Sigh. Sometimes It seems in vain! Note to self: Freezing whole tomatoes? Not a good idea. I gotta go downstairs and test which brine of pickles I like best, before pickling those next sets of cukes. My garden is starting to look reeeeally sad...I can't wait until it's done and canning is done, so we can till it in and I can plan for next year! I just hope my volunteer toms make it to ripening before the frost! They got a lot of green ones on them, and i'm hoping they don't go to waste.

Oh, is there any "weeds" that are posionous to ducks? I ripped out a few handfuls and threw it in their pen and they started going to town, and I didn't think of it until right now. What happens if I gave them something posionous?! I worry too much. They love tomatoes. Come booking it out of their igloos for them. I guess I shouldn't worry too bad what they eat, the guy I bought the older ones from said DH says if they don't start laying eggs soon hes going to eat them. Poor ducks are so scared they are never gonna lay eggs! lol.

DH went dove hunting during the week and he got 4 of em. So, we had dove breasts wrapped in bacon on the grill. They were good, but really small for all the work! Sheesh! Hopefully he will get a deer this year, or two! Two would be fantastic!

I'm sooo glad I have monday off, I need to catch up on my poor house!

Poor house...ciao everyone!

Good Morning Everyone! Hoping today will be more conducive to outside work. Seemed like every hour it rained. Played the waiting game for a return call on the feeders and and waterers it never happened. So have to run some cuc's out to the BFF's in exchange for maters. Run to Rapids for a bunch of stuff. And do some grocery shopping. Tore apart the recoil on the auger and found the problem needs a new part and was all over the net looking for one never found it. So have to stop in a couple of places to see if they have one. Still not gettng any eggs. Begining to wonder if there is such a thing as a false molt. Have a good one!

DrH--too bad Rapids isnt on the way to here! I am drowning in eggs! I scrambled 2 dozen for the dogs yesterday. Those mamas in the barn went wild for them! WHile I was out there I saw something run out of the coop and got the flashlight. I could see eyes...it was a cat. I am wondering if when the neighbors moved out they left a few? The one I had in the trap this morning doesnt look like one of theirs though...hmmm. I am sure it is loving going in that coop and catching mice. I have not used any poison this year so they are really getting numerous! I will call and make a appt to get the cat altered and then I will release him back out there. My other feral doesnt seem to catch mice--I think she just likes to lay on the hay bales and sun herself--lazy little thing!

Annarie---what can I say? I just laughed so hard at your post! You'd better watch out is all I can say; by the time you get your own place you will be in serious danger of becoming like me!!!

(and you dont want THAT!) Nice looking runners though! I am starting to think that I mess mine...they were so fun to watch!

FM--what weekend is you anniversary? Ours is on Oct. 13. I think we talked about this when we were camping last time...of course I cant remember! October is gorgeous at the Kettle for sure; I am wondering with all this fall type weather so early if the color might be already past by then? (oh that was a BAD sentence!) What do you think Becky--October too cold for ya? You can borrow one of our tent heaters...course it wont help there--no power!

Bigz--thanks for the recipe idea...I am going to try canning some of my spuds to see how they taste. Might be something new for us! Definitely will try the french fry idea too.

All you school people--I feel for you...dont miss the headaches and studying that is for sure! I did one of those accelerated programs for my degree and it was pretty intense. It was fun though. I met some really nice people.

So I have a sick goat outside this morning. S/he has not been thrifty since born. It was laying on it's side yesterday and I helped it up--this is the same thing that it's twin did a few months ago. I guess I will get out there and take care of it...that is the worst part about owning animals ya know? But you have to be responsible...at least that is what I keep telling myself. Speaking of responsible...I took two cats to the vet yesterday and one is healing well from his dental surgery and the other (my favorite) is in early renal failure. This is the fourth one for me to get this...it is pretty early stages and he is 12 years old. I cant understand why I get this here. I am wondering if there is a component in our water? So he is on (really) expensive food and I will be giving him fluids 2x a week to get his blood levels down. GRRRR!

It is so quiet around here since the kids are back at college! Kinda nice but kinda sad too...I went grocery shopping yesterday with the thought that they were coming home for the long weekend...now they're not! So we have a whole buttload of extra perishable food to eat up! I guess I will be trying that cantaloupe jam!
Have a fabulous long weekend everybody--stay SAFE! Love you all! Terri O

Just got home from my second run. Went to get the feeders etc. from that guy, holy crap! Coulda brought a trailer left as many as I took. But did score more than enough feeders and waters to give to others that might want them. Also got some hanging heat light fixtures that might come in handy for the addition to the coop next year. Did I just say that? Dang it! He had 3 hand blown glass eggs I put them in 3 nest boxes right away. Hated to use them their pretty cool!!! But need to get them laying again and the Wyandottes started. TO I so wanted eggs for B'fast this morning! I tell them everyday that I'm gonna warm up the stock pot! They laugh at me! They think it's funny! Dang it they know me too well! I talk to them about soup and fajita's, dumplings, and roasted chicken and they still laugh. God I hate them so! While unloading the ex stopped by to drop off a chicken book that her best friend bought for me. Her BFF has hated me since the divorce some 30 years ago. Don't blame her and this came as a real shock. Guess she's been getting some of the garden overflow and figured out that I'm not so bad after all. Bout time geesh. Just glad to hear it. Looks like a really nice book! Keeping Chickens by Hobson and Lewis. Plus she gave me 4 issuses of ME News from 01. Something to read this winter. Tried to get the recoil part this morning the guy said that unless I could find one for parts I'd probably have to buy the whole unit he said he thought they were around $35 I told him I found them on line for about $85. His site was down so he's going to call me. Ouch! Man's gotta fish though!

It feels like fall outside!

I was out cleaning pens today, I took a good look at all the birds, and decided it's time to let some of the ones that don't really excite me go to make room for other projects. I posted them on CL, but I have a pair of Dark Campbells (there were too many drakes in the pen for breeding, so they look really awful, but they're molting now, so in a few months they'll be stunning again), a pair of the Blue Bibbed/Magpie Calls from AlpineRanch, two really sweet mixed-breed drakes, a Stanbridge White drake, two Columbian x partridge cross Bantam Cochin cockerels, and a Columbian Cochin cockerel up for grabs, if anyone's interested. For any of you, I'd give most of them away. For the Dark Campbells and the Calls though, I am asking a reasonable price. They are all housed in pens across the yard from the little Runners that were sick last week, so you shouldn't bring home anything nasty!

EDITED to add pictures of some of the birds I'm letting go:

Terri O - I know, I'm terrible! I'm an impulse buyer when it comes to birds. I'm terribly stingy with everything else, but I see birds for sale and the next thing I know they're in my yard. It's a sickness.

I don't suppose you'd want 2 female Welsh Harlequins? Someone? Anyone!?!

I posted them on craigslist, and had one person interested, and they never got back to me. Sigh. I have horrible luck with craigslist.

You know, earlier this spring I did want to try Harlequins SO badly! I hatched three, and got all boys!

But the last thing I need right now is more birds!

I shouldn't have bought those Runners I bought yesterday, but I just had a little 8-week-old Runner pass away suddenly, and I saw those White Runners and they looked like duck angels.
roll.png
I have three weeks now, before the breeder brings them to the Wisconsin International Poultry Club Show for me, and I have THREE new pens and coops to build in that time...it would have only been two, but I just HAD to have those Runners!

So, that's one pen per week. I'd better get cracking!

What a bunch of sick people!

When I was telling L on the phone about the score she said so I'll be coming home to a coop on the back porch. Long pause...... No I said it would get too hot back there with the wood stove but don't think it didn't cross my mind. She said I knew it would sooner or later. Then I said but you know there is a nice southern exposure on the front porch. She laughed! Why does everything/body laugh at me? I don't get it!
