Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

We have a mix of bantam and standard in the same pens and they are getting along fine-I've seen the bantams boss the large ones around as well as the other way too. We use hanging feeders and 3 gal waterers- but it depends on how much room you have and if you are keeping the food and water inside the coop or outside in the run. Hope this helps and

for getting chickens!

HI all! I thought I would join in here. We have 17 2 month old chickens and are loving this. I don't know many people at all in the area who have chickens so I thought it would be a good idea to check out this thread.

Scary, scary stuff with the hunting. There are new property owners next door who let just about anyone on the land and it has been a pretty rough start this season. Things like this make me even more nervous.

Good Morning All!

KelBelle! Lots of great people here! About where are you at? Bigz feels good to have that major job out of the way huh? Now you can enjoy all your hard work! Moved all our goodies back to where they belong yesterday and was drooling and admiring the larder. More next year that's for sure. Need to download the Tribune on line heard there a piece in there on Tim's attack. Still blows my mind! Got one end of the living room emptied out to scrub today then will do the other end. We're getting there. Tomorrow is L's B'day told her no matter what we're going out to eat. We need and deserve it! She has really handled this situation a lot better than I thought she would. I'm proud of her! Have a good one!

Kristip I got standard and bantums all together and they do fine. My silkie roo is the boss.

I haven't had a roo fight in a long time... since I sent the roo that attacked my daughter to freezer camp. But I got some hens that roo fight. LOL

Good morning all! I am sorry that I have been sporadic...I ordered a new computer. This one does not like to work every day now...I hate the fact of "planned obsolescence" (I think that is what it is called) this machine is only 4 years old and DH says it is past it's "useful life." What kind of BS is THAT??!!! Sorry--end of rant!

OK--the meet up this weekend...as of now I am planning on going and camping at Horsemen's. The problem is that we have 4 vehicles with park stickers and need to take two trucks; one for the camper and one for the horse trailer...of course only ONE truck has a current sticker! AACK! I am tempted to pull the trailer down and ask my friend if I can park the truck at her place. Bad enough that I have to get a trail pass to ride. I thought I had one for this year but it appears that I havent ridden in a state park ALL YEAR! This is incredible...how come I am low on clients and still have way less time than usual? I guess Murphy's Law always applies..."work you need to do expands to fill all available time." (or something like that) Darn! Maybe there are day passes for riding? I dont think so...

So I need to confer with DH and he is not on here. He is in Green Bay and thought he might have to work into tomorrow. We may not get there until Saturday morning. An 11:00 ride sounds good Becky and then a meet up at 1. Since we will have horses there and they are not allowed at Ottowa Fordmommy and her DH (happy anniversary BTW) should come over to Horsemen's for the meet-up. We will have our camper set up there and a fire in the pit! Do you know where it is FM? I am not sure if I will be able to get on here again (darn 'puter) so I will tell you that you go South on 67 to Eagle and then West on 59 into Palmyra...that is Main Street. Drive to the hardware store (Tru-value?) and turn left. over RR tracks, past Pal steel and you will see the camp on your left in about a mile. You have my number right?
I will try to get on later...

So, chicken news...still needing to build coops! Almost have enough "good stuff" to start. The bachelor pad is almost done in the barn. I have to build and hang a door and then catch up all the buggers! The turkeys are still sleeping in the trees along with the Guineas I got from Jim. My original ones sleep in the loft above the run-in shed--I wish they would join up with them but I think they have the mindset that they are short turkeys! They sure act like it!

Well, enough typing for me--gosh, it is nearly a novel...get me writing...we are going to Madison this afternoon to take dd18 to lunch and I am bringing a client along who is just a riot...should be fun! Gotta run--there's DH, maybe get his ideas on the truck situation!
Hope to see ya on Saturday....Terri O

Raimnel--I have done the surgery a couple of times with good results. Look for the tutorial on here and go for it! It's not that bad...

Long story short...we are canceling. Actually we are just going to stay up here for the weekend at Hartman Creek State Park. Sorry. Have a nice weekend everyone.

Chilly Afternoon All... raimnel, Dave's user name is whippet128. I was pleased with both the buckeyes and the black javas I purchased from him.
Terri, we swear at our puter daily. It's on the list of things to buy. Just bought that new freezer, so we hope this bucket of bolts can limp a while yet.
I have a couple milk house heaters going to take the chill off. prolly have to fire up the wood furnace this evening after hunting. Hard to believe it's fish fry Friday tomorrow already. I'm always up for a belly full of fish. Out to check for eggs.... Have Fun, Be Safe.... ~ bigzio

Thank you for the welcomes!

We live in central Sheboygan County. We have Buff Orpingtons, Golden Laced Wyandottes and Easter Eggers. I made a portable PVC pen for them, but now they are free ranging. I don't know yet if that is a smart idea or not. We have plenty of hawks around, but haven't lost any chickens yet. They seem to keep close the coop, the gardens right up against the house (which I admit that I did not take care of this summer so they are overgrown
hmm.png
) or the tall grass. The pen is out for them and one corner is propped up so they can get in it if they choose to. Usually they are not in there. A couple of times I have found them all huddled in the pen or underneath the coop. I think that the hawks have perhaps made attempts but were unsuccessful since they usually keep to areas that would be difficult for a hawk to make an easy swoop in. What do you think? We have loose plans to fence in a large area for them that will be mostly tall grass and some short. I am hoping that hawks won't be too likely to swoop in to grassy areas that are at least two feet high, but that might be wishful thinking. I also want to keep the chickens from wandering anywhere near the nastiness of the neighboring farm land that is now owned by a factory dairy operation. Blech.

Do any of you in the area take special precautions in the winter? I was able to pick up two EcoHeaters at a hardware store for $40 off each panel. I guess they must have had them for a while. I didn't ask......I just paid with a smile and took off. LOL In hindsight, I probably only needed one to put near the waterer in the coop to keep it from freezing. Worse yet, Costco now sells those suckers for $75. LOL Live and learn, live and learn.

Maybe I should buy a bunch and sell them for double like other places do. Ha ha.

Are there certain diseases that are common in Wisconsin or certain parts of the state? I am sorry for all the questions. I just found myself with some that were specific to WI.

I cant believe I got on here two times in ONE day! Probably my 'puter heard me tell you that I was getting a new one! LOL!
Have a great anniversary FM--glad you are still camping...even though it is really close to home! DH had to stay at work until tomorrow night so I am thinking about meeting for a day ride Becky...what do you think? I think it is supposed to be a miserable day and maybe the whole weekend! I got a load of hay sitting in the drive that I have to unload to the mow by tomorrow night I guess...all I want to do is go to bed! It was an exhausting day at work...just got home and am not going to my gardening meeting...too tired!
Man, I got home at 6 and now (half hour later) it is already dark! I feel winter depression setting in already! Not looking forward to the looong dark days at all.
Let me know what you want to do Becky--I think it is just us now right? Terri O

(ps) good luck with the next room of scraping DrH--is that the last one to be done?

all who are new!

Sent DD out to collect eggs yesterday and this is what she brought back in:

45425_img_1784.jpg

the 3 small light ones are from our Partridge Cochin Bantams and we aren't sure if the big darker brown is from the 1 Cuckoo Marans(who is 7 months old) or from one of the 2 Welsummer pulltes(who are 6 months old). Today we collected another one and DD reported that she thinks it belongs to the Cuckoo as it had those feathers stuck to it!
