Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

Might as well say Good Evening All it'll be dark in an hour and a half. WCc so glad to hear things went well for you! That is always scary not knowing what the outcome will be. Now to rest and heal up. TO and Bec think you made the right move to cancel this weekend. Cold is not a problem but wet and cold sucks! KelBelle how high are you going to build this fence to keep them in? Think 6 feet would be the minimum. Bigz as you know there will other chances at least you know whats around. Saw my first buck out the window yesterday standing in the woods just to the west of the house. As soon as I saw it knew it was a buck just by the way he was standing, looked like a smaller 6. Lockdown is working 2 eggs yesterday 3 today. Snots! Today was spent putting things back and sorting through boxes, man we got a lot crap!

Six feet? LOL I don't know. Do you think they will all regularly fly out just because they can? I was hoping that if the area was plenty large enough that they wouldn't have much reason to fly out. I don't know what to do really. My son had to direct them away from the road twice yesterday. People around here don't stop for anything. I sure would hate to have to confine them, but maybe we'll have to check out some decent tractor pens. I was quite hopeful that we could just put a large fence from the coop out for them. You must think I am crazy for wanting to fence them in. LOL

Evening again to all....yep the rain was a non stop patter all day.
In regards to the fence, a five foot will work fine in a pen area close to the coop....out and about areas can be shorter because chooks won't fly over a fence they can see through. That may sound stupid ?
Yep, Doc the lock down really is the key to nest box layers....I actually had 5 layed in the nests today because of the rainy weather and the lock down. The black javas were simply the best, They started laying in the boxes, showing the buckeyes what's right. It's kinda a growing pain for everyone to get into the correct sink of things. I really believe that the close eye by the handlers can make all the difference between nice hens and problem egg eaters. Just kinda a hands on eye on things.
Have Fun... ~ bigzio

Bigz, tell my chooks about the no-flying-over-the-fence-you-can-see-through!

Maybe because they're used to having the run of the place, but I can't keep about 7 of those birds in their coop run for anything. The Anconas, Sumatras, and the white EE bust out every time. My fence is 5 feet, I think it needs a cap. Would deer netting across the top of the run work? I have visions of chickens flying up into it and tangling themselves like fish. In fact, I've watched a few of those birds fly clear up to the coop roof. Maybe I need to make 'em fat, lol!

Welcome KelBelle!

Good Wet Morning Everyone! The ground is still saturated and the rain just lays on the ground. Stopped trying pump out the crawl space for now just wasting elec, can't wait to see the bill this month.

Don't know KelBelle maybe it'll work. But you know it's always greener on the other side. Should be getting my puter back today the lap top is a pain to me. Just used to my old ways. Going to clean the last closet today and bring the dryer back in and wire it back up. L made her home made pizza last night she really has me spoiled. Really like the downtown pizza but it's really salty as is most food that is made in resturants. Keep your rain coats handy!

Not sure about the deer netting, I know that there is poultry netting, we are using a black mesh tarp over the top of our run. Our run is a 10'x15' area(divided into 3 equal pens) but we found a 12'x16' black mesh tarp at Menards and it seems to be working good so far, we'll see what the winter brings.

Has been raining here off and on as well!

Good morning! Thought I'd be posting with my NEW computer this morning but...I have forgotten my password to get on here (I have the computer save them all 'cause my memory is not good!) So I caught up reading on the new one and have to post on the old one! LOL--I am so used to this keyboard too and the new one has bigger and wider spaced keys so I will have to relearn! But is is the prettiest GREEN! Looks like one of those metallic beetles!
Rainy here too...I am so glad that we decided not to camp! I wonder if FM is getting wet up North? It has been raining all night and still is here...I actually went back to sleep this morning just listening to the rain! It was very nice.

Today I must bring my houseplants in...gotta make space. We have one that DH calls "the hernia plant" cause it's so large. It is a Cheffleurra (cant spell it) and it has to have a 4' diameter and 5' high! Like having another giant piece of furniture in a room for sure. It is also 19 years old so I dont want to just let it die! Maybe it can live in my son's room for the winter.

Does everyone have their winterizing finished? I sure dont! I might take the staple gun out and put up the feed bags on the mesh inside the coop today...dont think there will be much working outside! I have puppies coming on Monday too...all my husky/akita mixes got adopted yesterday! Yeah! The Mom was pretty sick of them...hopefully she will find a home soon too. Such a sweet dog!

Well--I think I want some eggs to eat! (imagine that!) Then off to get some stuff done--good grief; it's 930 already! Have a great day everyone! Terri O

I, for one, was glad to see some rain yesterday as we had 17 teenagers over for a halloween party that included a Smores over a campfire and flashlight tag out in the big field. Enough rain early on to pretty much eliminate the fire danger and yet it dried out and was clear(ish) during most of the party. It was our chickens first thunderstorm though so I'm sure they were pretty freaked out in their coop. But they seem OK today and are enjoying eating the pumpkin guts leftover from last night.

Oh, and Terri O I'm just a little north of you in Waterloo!

acerguy, we are near Cottage Grove so not to far from you either!

Terry O- we are going to have to watch and see what we need if any more winterization since we did insulate the sides and roof of the new coop.

Here's hoping that no one area gets to much rain this time

DH said that last night we had some pretty good rain going through-I slept through it all! Still raining here but on the lighter side.

Have our 4-H County awards program later today so we will be going to that.

Stay dry everyone!
