Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

evening, was this a long day.. I didn't do a thing, hardly.. I resharpened the lawnmower blades a bit more.. If I don't get my parts soon , I won't have any blade left..

The peacock didn't run when I opened the patio door today.. He even hung around while I tossed some bread out.. Then tonight, He let me walk completely under him while he sat on the gate beam.. I will have him eat out of my hand before winter..

I had one response to my ad for a peahen on cl.. the guy wanted $50 for a India Blue/Black Shoulder cross.. I thought that was a bit extreme for a cross breed..

I had no response for my ad to sell Americauna , though..

LOL ,, but doesn't it feel good to let off steam??

Personnally, I thought maggots were maggots.. Are there maggots that will eat live flesh ?? How about that ??

Take two glasses of wine and you will feel better in the morning..

When I was a pet groomer, I saw some pretty grizzly cases of fly strike on dogs that were not taken care of. There's nothing beneficial about shaving off matted coat and finding maggots beneath.

Thanks, Elaine! I sure hope I get plenty of bountiful harvests in the future.
Very interesting info about the farm. I'm going to have to look into it when I have some time. A lot of mail order nurseries carry gooseberries, but you'll have to check the varieties.
Are you sure the tiny ones were honeyberries? What color were they? They almost sound like elderberries by the size, but they wouldn't be ripe yet. And honeyberries ripen before strawberries do. Hmmmm. I looked on Wiki but it didn't really describe a length, just a diameter. I was under the impression they were somewhere around the size of blueberries, but I could be completely wrong. Oh well. If they are a pain to harvest or do anything with, the chickens will love them, I'm sure.

As for the pawpaws, yes, I've heard that bees do not care for the scent of the flowers. That's ok. No shortage of flies around, esp. this year. My 2 trees are pretty close together, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed. I've heard them described as tasting like banana custard.

My sis has an asian pear tree, & I guess it is thriving. She got a huge harvest last season off her little tree, & she's in Racine Co. If you like them, I'd say go for it. Just try to get the dwarf varieties to save on space & get an earlier maturity. They don't live as long, though, either. Good luck with your orchard!

Well, I had internet issues last night and couldn't get on. Didn't have anything to say anyway, except to respond to post. I'm just going to respond to new post now.

Raiq..... Good luck on your selling and buying!!!

Jim,... Good idea letting young ones out for just a little before dark. They don't get too far and too distracted that way.

dkv... cool bee(ns) LOL! Cute knees on them too!

at the post! Is turk still hanging in there?

BigZ .... Sucks about the fox!

I've seen a case of "fly strike" on a young cat once.... nasty, nasty to see! It was so bad the cat didn't make it!

On a happier note.... Jasmine and the 6 chicks are doing great!

Ruddy met the neighbors and one of their dogs and it went great! However today when the son, (30's) wanted to talk to me, he did allot of barking, even though I came to him.

Youngest son calls me at 8:30 this MORNING!!! And says he has a young kitten that has been hanging around their place.........

Sooo.... now we have a kitten too!
th.gif

Poor little girl. Can't be more than 4-5 weeks old tops! She still wants to nurse,so I'll have to make a pacifier for her. Very tinny, very thin, but seems to be very smart! Ruddy still want's to chase the big cats, but the "Leave It" comand and a few hisses from a "ferocious" little kitten.... and he's fine with her! She walked right under his legs and right up to him!!!

Elaine- I heard a presentation from carrendale this spring and we went strawbery picking there this year. What a neat place. I have my notes and there are a few plants I want to look into that they have success with and yes the honeyberries are tiny things, but worth it for the flavor! I have 2 plants in with my blueberries.
For those that like the backyard fruit trees idea or small orchards- great book to borrow from your library called Landscaping with fruit. Has lots of info on lots of those neat fruits.

Good Open Window Morning Everyone! Sorry I've been AWOL Really sorry after seeing I'm about 15 pages behind on reading. Guess I'm not a good lurker.

Bigz sorry to hear about the fox, been there, done that. Everything has been keeping me very busy! Making pickles daily must have around 20 qts made and the vines are still loaded. We have enough for ourselves and now on to making some for the kids. Still have to make relish too. Wish the oldest DD and SIL were closer to enjoy the bounty! Man do I have the grapes this year, never had or heard of grape pie might have to look into that. So much done so much to do! Before you know what comes. Have been dressing and doing a little carving on Peatwo's toe, going to do a major job on it Sat. after I make 3 batches of egg noodles and 4 apple pies for the fam reunion on Sun.

Decided the prod reds are moulting and now the slw's seem to be following their lead only getting 1-2 eggs a day. Have only gotten 1-2 brown eggs in the last 2 months. Have 5-6 qts of cuc's soakin in ice water those should hit the jars around noon. The other day at Fleet found some vacuum packer rolls for $6 less than the Food Saver ones, and their 3 ply instead of 2. Hope they work! Looks like human weather ahead

good AM, good news first.. I got an email from Sandi/FT last night.. she tried to post on byc a couple of times, but her posts went poof.. More than that I do not know..

Last night about 11PM we were sitting on the couch sucking on Old Fashions, when a guinea went running past the window squaking like crazy.. we turned on the outside light and made the dog go out.. saw or heard nothing.. this AM there was a pile of feathers near the hay pile.. I forgot to check the pine tree when I locked doors last night.. there were 3 other guineas waiting at the gate this AM.. My fault,, I fed the fox..

The last 2 turkeys that hatched late are not very robust.. I am going to quit hatching late eggs.. they are always sickly and weak anyway..

I tried having my coffee outside this AM.. flies wouldn't leave me alone..

It was nice to sleep without AC or fans blowing last night..

I have to get down to the garden today.. Potato bugs are at one end of the row.. I hate to do it, but the sprayer is coming out.

there are bugs on the kale also..

what is "fly strike"?
.

ok so I am new to potatoes and hope the plants I have been fostering in the "potatoe" section of the garden are really potatoes- how do you know when they are ready for picking?
Had fun wtih Carol yesterday where my kids got to ride the new ponies with her niece. We had so much fun! Even though my son has major listening issues. So getting those ears checked at our doctor appointment in a few weeks.
Have a great day everyone!

Kristip, potatoes are usually ready for digging when the vines wither and dry up.. You can harvest some before that by feeling under the plant by hand and pullling a large one out without digging up the plant.. that will allow the smaller ones to keep growing.. However, we always plant so many, that we just dig up a few plants when we figure there are a few medium to large ones ready.. there are lots of baby potatoes at this point, but we just wash them and cook them with the skins on.. soak them with butter and/or ranch dressing on your plate and yummmm...
