I've lost several chickens to a Fox, at least I think it was a fox. I saw one in the middle of the day once walking up the hill with its head moving back and forth as it was watchin a male guinea chase a guinea hen in a figure 8 !! It didn't know what to think or who to chase. I yelled out FOX FOX !!! DH ran out with a gun and fire warning shots to scare it away. I lost a guinea that was sitting on a nest. By the looks of it we think it was a fox too. They will grab their prey and run with it. This poor guinea must have really planted herself on those eggs because there was a huge clump of feathers in the next. Like the fox just got a mouth full before it struck again and got the guinea.

We finally decided we can't lose any more of my laying hens so they don't free range unless we are out there but unless it is towards evening we can't do it because we'd never get them back in when it's in the middle of the day.
Again sorry for your loss !!

I read this book The Inner World of Farm Animals by Amy Hatkoff
Talks a lot about them being social emotional and intellectual creatures.

Under chickens, on how important a dust bath is to a chicken,,,,,,, She writes that a chicken will actually peck a key 100 times to open a door to be able to dust bathe.

Why do you all have to live so far away!? I bet my mom would sell a turken hen cheap if someone was going to give the pair a good home. She doesn't have any blue hens though, just brown and white. She wanted more than anything for that blue one to be a hen. The sweet white rooster picks fights with him so she's assuming its a cockerel.
Yes, that's me in the picture. I may have to build another coop so I can keep that rooster. He is just too sweet. I'm not a fan of white chickens, but his personality can't be beat.
And yes, Edward all the way. He is just so intense. They chose the perfect actor for him too. I can barely handle reading the books and watching the movies. I can't imagine the teenagers with their raging hormones.

I had a good day today. Did lots of work in the coop and took a long shower and then took my dog Tiger for a walk in the field. She was very happy but she ran really fast so I may have to give her a second dose of her pain meds tonight. Here she is watching squirrels one early AM.

Dornes the peachick sounds cute hope to see a pic soon.

bigz supper sounds good.

dkvart the sallad bar sounds good. I think that was in Backyard Poultry mag? I want to do that if/when I get all this other stuff done in the coop. Well I am for sure going to build them an outdoor dust bathing area for this winter hands down.

And hello to everybody else too. Hard to remember everything.
