ash is named ash for a reason.. if you can get one sorted to the side , and let it burn undisturbed, the ash will sometimes hold the shape of the piece of wood.. then if you touch it, it collapses ..

No name for the gosling yet.. I ate a gosling one time.. It is in the top 10 of all the meals I ever had.. believe it or not, it was on a KLM air plane flight from Germany to USA..

Rogers has no fear for his job.. I think he was delighted to see how well those guys were doing..

I am not real thrilled at the minus temps on the way.. but I am glad they held off this long..

Last ight I had Nora in the house for a treat after her good walk around the perimeter. when I took her out to tie her in the lean-to and lock up the birds.. Lo and behold, the geese and about 10 guineas were in the lean-to.. NOW what : the dog is tied near the door and they are "trapped" in the rear of the pen.
I tried to chase the geese past Nora, but they were having no part of THAT one.. so I shut the door and let them work it out.
Nora immediately layed down for the night.. when I left, the geese were complaining and staring at that white mountain of a dog.. the guineas stayed on the roost and went back to sleep..

My client's houses are much more quiet. Good luck on the shoes for the pullet...I have a LF cochin roo (remember Hop a Long?) that has a big hock too. The woman I got him from says he was always like that. He does have to have his own accomodations cause the other roos pick on him. He doesnt run or fight very well--but he does get the job done with his ladies...DrH those are the "DH" eggs. Aslo that egg (if it is a duck) will not make much of a meal for ya...it is a call duck!

They dress out dam^ small!
Yes Cind--those are definitely guinea eggs! I havent found any from mine as yet. They do have a tell-tale shape to 'em hey? I get those speckled eggs from lots of my birds too. The egg customers really like the different types, I have found. Are you planning on raising yourself some guineas? They are the most adorable babies! Better get those roos butchered..or bring 'em up here--I can get them sold!

I suppose I'd better get outside and get the animals fed up...big cover-all day today! Stay warm and have a great day! Go Badgers!

Re: Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

Yes today is day 21!

Your DH must have done a great job on the incubator!
Oh yeah DrH--you dont need to turn those eggs at all once the turner comes out....just let them alone to hatch!

I noticed Cindy's eggs, made me think of a plumb bob. Can you tell I'm avoiding the sanding?

Well - we got about 2-3 inches of snow last night... Not enough to plow but just enough to be a PITA shoveling... LOL

As far as snow caving in the bird netting - I ended up covering my 10X30 run (which has a 2' drop from one side to the other) with some 12' rough cut 2x6's toenailed about three fee apart. I then stretched a tarp tightly over that using 1 1/2" drywall screws with 3" washers. Wasn't sure how it was gonna work but this small sticky snow that we had last night just slid right down to the lower side. So depending upon how wide your run is, you may be able to get away with using 2X4's, stood on end using the same method. Next year I plan on installing a metal roof to match the roof on the adjoining shed/coop. I guess the most important part of the whole equation is that you have some sort of slant on the top of your run. Thank God I did TONs of research on here before I designed the run...LOL;)

I heard Bert the Rooster Crowing to welcome the sun this morning! Even my neighbor commented that it was nice to hear a Rooster - said it reminded him of when he was a kid... I wonder what he will think about it this summer when we all have our windows open!

How bout that Packer game? Was touch and go for a while! I sure do hope that the Pack can come up with the $$$$ to keep Flynn! However, after last nights display of talent, he will probably be able to name his own price - Hopefully he maintains his Packer pride and stays with the green and gold. It was nice to see Rogers actually cheering him on.

Oh yea - FT - Got loads of venison here too - if you and the OM (I love that phrase) need any. I was lucky enough to bag a good sized 167lb 8 pointer as well as a GOOD EATIN' 110lb Doe. So where ever we meet, I'll be bringing some U.P. High Speed Beef!

Hope everyone stays safe and has a great day!

EDIT: Oh yea - Ash burns great! That's about all I burned last year.... However, it does seem to leave more ashes to clean out than other hardwoods. It also sparks and pops (not like pine or cedar) when you go to stir the ashes to get the hotter stuff at the bottom of the pile up towards the top. I had to cut down three big Bass trees about a year and a half ago.... You wanna talk about ashes!!!! LOL between cleaning out the ashes and reloading the wood constantly, I'm almost ready to have a big bonfire outside! LOL Bottom line, Be happy with the ASH!

hey DrH, if it were me, I would put off that sanding until it is warm enough to have the doors and windows open..

I had a guy do some mudding for me on an apartment..(Kitchen living room and bath)His motto was "lay in on thick and sand a lot.". I had another guy do the sanding.. after the sanding was done and the dust swept and vaccuumed , there was 2&1/2 five gal pails full of dust.

Dr.H I use the chicken egg turner through incubation then take it out about 3 days before I think they will start hatching (usually things start hatching about 2 days early). With the duck eggs I sort of tip them on a side and alternate the side so that they get a maximum of movement. My call duck hatches have not been great but I think that is probably due to the egg orientation in the turner (they should be on their side) and of course the breed is fickle. The best hatches I have had have been under the mammas with just a little bit of outside help with the pip and zip. Nothing more heartbreaking than watching a fully developed baby duck thrash about and then die from exhaustion because they do not have the room to turn and zip.

Almost over this cold. I better get healthy pretty quick, I have to go back to work on Wed.

Stay warm everyone!

Windy Day To All.... Hope I can get some advice here for one of my old lt brahmas. She has developed raspy breathing. I know we just talked about this a little while ago. She was eating this morning, however her breathing is not good. Was Tylan 50 recommended for the problem?

Thanks for any help... bigz

Well, It looks like FT and I are making another "Chicken Rendezvous." Haven't worked out the full details yet but am looking forward to the swap and catching up.

Bigz - I wish I could help you but I'm a relative newbie to Chickens... Besides losing a few to the dog and in-fighting, I've been pretty lucky so far thanks to all the advice given here!

Another couple of questions: Has anyone used PDZ? It's made for horse stalls but I've read it can be spread lightly in chicken coops. I use the wood shavings, deep litter method. I'd like to get a hold of some DE but there is none to be found in this two horse town... (Nearest city is Green Bay- 50 miles south). So I was wondering about the PDZ. I don't have any smell problems - yet - but I'm thinking with this cold weather, just like me, they are gonna start hanging around in house more than normal... Thoughts? Suggestions....?

I was also thinking about throwing some alfalfa hay into their run - I've heard both good and bad about it. I do throw about 1 1/2 cups of Boss out everyday for them to scratch at but thought the alfalfa hay may keep them occupied a little more during these cold months...

As always - Tanks a bunch!
