Tomski your killin me about the ribs on the grill! I've had a taste for some good ones for a long time. Can't get decent meat of vegies from the Piggly in town. And not enough ribs on the locally raised pig for me.

Days a wastin better get to it!

Good Mornin'

Sun was out nice and bright earlier
cool.png
but now it's back to overcast with just the occasional sun. Darn - I miss the sun... LOL

Game sucked last night but the Country Style Ribs were perfect. I raised a pig this summer and instead of smoking the hams, had roasts and a few steaks cut out of them instead. You are right about not getting a lot of ribs... LOL a pig only has so many. The Country style ribs are not actually ribs though - they are cut from the front loin section. Although I had to kill, skin and cut the pig in half, the butcher I brought it to only charged me 30 cents a pound to cut and package everything. Cost of pig/Total feed/Butchering came out to $1.78 per lb. I'm thinking of raising two this year and selling the other one.

I'll probably bring my "not so famous" Polish raised roast pork w/ho-made sauerkraut & dumplings for the big meal at the Bash... I've got almost 5 gallons of Kraut "brewing" in the basement. It should be good and "ripe" by May
wink.png

I'm not sure what I'm gonna do today. Right now I'm gonna just sit right here with my coffee and do a little "surfing."

Laters...

good morning, looks like a nice day brewing.. sun is still out, but a bit cloudy..

I made a fish sandwich for mom last night.. told her it was northern.. she said, it doesn't taste fishy.. she ate the whole thing.. I think I will name it "poor man's tuna"..

I think I will go upstairs and mix a batch of pancakes..

I noticed the roosters are getting a little more rambunctious and crowing more.. the days are getting longer in the afternoon too.. It is staying daylight until after 5PM now..

I better get busy building those raised beds for carrots and lettuce and onions.. It will be time for planting before we know it..

I drove to town yesterday and noticed the absence of snow banks along the road. LOVE it ... it can just stay llike this for awhile ,,and then warm up...

Enjoy the day!

I'm bettin everyone that has a fossil fuel furnace is happy with this winter. I'm trying not to think about the garden yet but it's already happening too Jim.
lau.gif
A bit early. As long as I'm planning on moving the tomato garden in with big garden thinking of a few raised beds myself. I know the Ford can do a lot of work but don't think she'd pull the plow very well right now.
roll.png
Gotta love being over the hump on the daylight! Just read your E Jim you should post it on here! Ain't it the truth? Now Tomski this is becoming a love/hate situation!
gig.gif
At the very least you have to bring some of that kraut to the bash. And the recipe! Adding cabbage to the garden this year. Laura doesn't care for it but I do! So going to put my crocks to use this year and can some for my "kraut fix". I would love to raise some pigs but don't have a suitable place to raise them. The BFF has been talking about buying another meat saw and I know we could do a decent job of doing our own butchering. The wheels just won't stop turning!

lau.gif
Maybe I can talk him into a cement mixer too. Stop it! Just stop it! Anna pond for the ducks/fish

I'd LOVE to get a cement mixer! LOL Lot's of projects to mess with! LOL

Here is where I got my recipe - http://www.wildfermentation.com/resources.php?page=sauerkraut Pretty simple. I use a food grade 5 gallon bucket. I'm doing mine "low and slow" in the basement. last year I was dealing with mold and a bit of smell doing it in the spare room...LOL No mold yet - and I don't think I'm gonna get any. The basement stays at around 58-60 degrees depending upon whether or not I'm using the dryer (Electric Dryer is fitted with a water filter that exhausts directly into the basement during the cold months - hate seeing all that expensive heat going outside) The Kraut has been brewing since around Dec 1st... It's not done yet but is tasting pretty good. I plan on adding just a little bit of sugar and onions right before it's completely done. I then freeze it in quart sized freezer bags. They lay nice and flat without hardly taking up any room in the freezer.

Morning all !! Just popping in to share a few sites you may find interesting.

Here is one showing how easy it is to use the nipple waterers.

And this one is cool. It is the embyro development stages ! Pay attention DrHa !!
http://eggcartonlabels.blogspot.com/2011/04/chicken-embryo-development-graphic.html

Coffee hasn't kicked in yet so not to much to comment on yet.

Oh and DrHa, if you'd stay up a little later with us out at the campfire you could sleep in !!!
MLH What a beautiful horse you have there !!! Glad to hear the colic was caught early. I just met a woman at the bread store the other day that has a 44 yr old horse !!! Holy Cow !! I really had better make arrangements for the day I cross over the rainbow bridge so my horses have a home.
My roosters are already going to Jim, as PETS !!!
gig.gif

No more hatchings. I did something stupid, I put 5 bantam turken eggs in the incubator last night !! I found two dead chicks in their pen that I was surprised to see since they normally don't follow through with the hatch. So I brought the remaining eggs upstairs because I thought they would hatch anyday, well, turns out they are just starting to develop and one was clear so maybe just layed !!
I love my turkens but I have this wonderful ability to hatch out roos too !!! Must be the water up here !!
I get cuckoo colored and a black and tan color, not sure what you call them. Anyone want any bantam turkens ??
Tomski ????

Hi Again, went out and finished the chores.. 4 eggs already..

the toulouse was off the eggs .. I hope they don't get too cold..

I happened to be ooking at one of the red hens, and thought,, girl, you look like a rooster.. just then she jumped up onto the hay bales and crowed right in my face.. FT, do you want another rooster? R I Red.. just the prettiest thing you will ever lay eyes on.. If you don't want him he is going into the pot.. You woulldn't want that on your conscience, now, would you ??

I like kraut when it is about half finished.. I always figured that the canned kraut should be rinsed with water before cooking it..

FT, if we all stayed up just a little longer around the campfire, none of us would have to wake up for breakfast..

I have a cement mixer.. I am going to use it to blend my compost and dirt for the raised beds.. anybody got a good ratio of sand to compost ? I am thinking 3 sand to 1 compost.?
for onions, beets and carrots..

the peacock was showing off a little while ago.. he will really be something to see once those extra feathers grow out in the spring..

who was asking about containers to keep feed in ? I just bought another one of those square plastic garbage cans with the 4 inch wheels.. the lid is hinged on the handle.. it holds 100 pounds of feed with room to spare.. and the lid snaps shut so the wind won't blow it open.. I store 2 of them outside the coops. they keep the feed nice and dry also.. If you use them, use up all the feed before adding more, otherwise the stuff on the bottom gets sour..

game starts at noon.. one minute from now..

.............jiminwisc..........
