I can't say for sure that you don't have a health problem, but I'll bet that your vet won't find a contagious virus either by what you've said. Some don't make it past 5 years, and yes I've loss that many that fast when they get older. It sucks, I know....if the flock looks healthy, they prolly are. In my opinion. If you have any tested, please keep us posted.

Thank you, FT.

I was thinking of taking Henny to my vet to see if they can find anything. When Myrtle was ill, I had them check her stool for worms & it came back negative, so, no, I haven't wormed them lately.

I sure hope it is the end of my losses too. There are only 2 old ones left, plus my roo & 4 pullets, one of which is sitting on a clutch now. I sure don't want to hatch any chicks in the middle of an epidemic.

I sure hope it is over for you. I talked to the neighbors wife today (of the guy who supposedly dropped off a Cuckoo Maran Rooster that I never saw a trace of) and she said they have lost three birds lately. Of course he never mentioned it but she told me two were younger birds and one was older. I'm sure they don't have any idea what caused their loss either. I know they do keep their pen very clean etc and the weather has been well as you know very warm for winter.

You know I was just thinking, with them convulsing like they did, do you think maybe your food got moldy? Have you switched brands or anything?

Were you going to bring those chicks in the house after they hatch or let mama do it? It's kinda hard to take them away from Mama !!!

Really? Do you think losing 3 birds in such a short period of time is just a coincidence? Nothing to be worried about? Because losing 2 in less that 24 hours sure has me shaking in my boots.

I hope you all are right. I haven't been at this as long as alot of you here have, so I trust your judgement. But just going out & seeing how few birds I have left sure is a heartbreaker. I really cringe to see the look on Jack's face tomorrow when he can't find Henrietta. They have beem through so much together over the years.

Oh how sad !! They do have feelings. I've seen it with horses too when there is a loss at the barn !!

You might have to try to distract them with some special treats or something.

Bigz, only Henny was 9. My PRs weren't quite 3 (April).

FT, no moldy food. We just got this last bag a couple weeks ago. Right before X-mas, I think? And noone else seems affected, so far. The banties are fenced from the LF, but they can see & peck at each other through the fence, and drink each others water. My big concern is the wild birds & the mice. They manage to get in there & eat & drink to their hearts content. Who knows what they could be carrying. And there are at least 2 other houses relatively nearby that also have chickens. I can hear their roos crow when the wind is right.

My sister has lost a few birds lately too, but we have no access to each others flock. She was here for X-mas, but noone was wearing their chicken boots anywhere around where we were.

I was planning on bringing momma & eggs in a few days before so she could hatch them in peace. They're not all going to hatch the same day. I just hope she'll be a good first timer.

Distracting will be difficult. Jack, Henny & the rabbits had one area all to themselves. Now Jack & Shadow bunny (Brunswick) will both be without their longtime mates. (Shadow's gal has to stay inside now. She is better, but not good enough to go back outside).

ETA: this getting old crap is really starting to stink.

I think you have to consider that the production reds have a even shorter life span than some others. It happens...heck you would be amazed how many classmates have passed already. I've lost plenty of 3 year olds. I know how you feel...really I do. First thing one thinks is castrophroe on my hands....while the whole time your mangement practices were trying to prevent that from happening all along.

I know you are hands on all the time, and keep a closer eye on things than most.

If all goes well with the flock in the days to come...then what? Keep the faith....you're the best.
