I'm curious, does anyone have issues with Fisher cats getting their chickens? We had one here about a month or so ago, it killed one of the stray cats someone dumped down our road. I haven't seen it since but DH said their are tracks up by the road that looks like its still around.

Never heard of them called fisher cats. You do mean the fishers in the weasel family right ? I guess we used to have a lot of them around here but I think the neighbors and locals took care of them. They did the SSS ! Shoot, Shovel and Shut Up !!
The first time I heard about them was our neighbor at our cabin in Monico said I had to watch out for the Fishers as they would eat my toy poodles. The first thing I thought of was big fish swallowing up my poodles as they walked in the water at the lake !! LOL Never heard about Fishers.
Upon further investigation I found out what they were.
I guess the neighbor said that years ago the DNR released them to help control the Pork U Pine population. He and my Dad stopped and talked to the DNR just down the road from them that was releasing them.
I've heard stories from the neighbors around here that there were some big ones but we haven't seen any in 5 years that we've been up here. I'm glad for that !! They can be nasty. Come to think of it last year I stopped about 3 miles from here at a house to see if the tiny poodle in the road was there's and it was. She had told me that one of them came right up on her porch after the little guy once !!!

CC Sounds like on your next road trip to Townsend you'll have to stop in West Bend for eggs hey?

I originally was going to name her Angnes. It is my Aunt Esthers middle name. I thought of Esther too. Arnie and Esther but I really don't want to insult my Auntie but this little girl is real pig headed just like my Auntie !!! LOL
Never really even thought of Arnie until yesterday on the way to the vet I looked in the kennel in the back seat and said "How ya doing Arnold ? " LOL
Like I said it just came to me. Not sure if it will be Arnie but that is what I had written on the vet papers.

I feel so sorry for them. I guess pigs are suppose to heal very quickly. I sure hope so.

FT-Hey now! I said I don't eat pork!! LOL!! That was a great price on the piggy neuters. At the vet I worked at pig neuters were usually around $350 and up per pig. We didn't see that many PBP's so I can't remember what we did after the neuter suture wise. I hope they recover and heal quickly for you. At least there are no flies this time of year to contend with.
Sorry to hear about your dh's job. That's a bummer.

Apyl-I had to look up what a Fisher cat was! Never heard of them. I have not had any trouble so far with predators here so I can't help you with that one!

Finally something I can weigh in on (lurker here for months,,lol)

Fishers are pound for pound the nastiest predator in WI,,,the numbers have thinned here in the last 5 years, yes SSS hit the area Vilas/Oneida Cty

That said I still saw a few in the last year and they are my biggest fear now that I have a flock of layers and plan to pasture meat birds this summer.

They hunt and eat 24/7 and cover a large range. These critters will kill and eat cats, dogs, ducks, geese, chickens, corn, anything that fits the menu or the appetite. I've seen shed walls ripped open to get at a friends baby goats, sad day indeed.

IF you think you have one around, double check the coop, use extra heavy fencing/wire anywhere you even think there is a possible entry point, and, keep a loaded gun handy at all times at your backdoor. Most have been shot at b4 and will clear out even if you miss.

I deal with an abundance of coons (3 trapped in the last 2 weeks already), fox, coyotes, weasels, eagles, hawks, name it I have it,,,but the fishers are my biggest worry no doubt,,,,good luck

I just had my "friendly farmer neighbor" come over and he did all three of mine in about 10 minutes! I can still hear the sound of the flesh cutting! (sorry guys) He still calls me a baby....ick!
DH looked up the fischers too...he said that they are native though and not introduced....according to the website he was on. Something about them migrating into the US in the Paleosomething era.
I think the chicken is done! Yeah...with roasted reds and sweets and asparagus on the side! MMMM--later Terri O

Fishers were native but trapped to non-existant levels and were reintroduced in the Nicolet Forest during the '60's to control porcupines that were eating anything the forest service installed using creosote for preservatives, hence, outhouses, road signs, and guard rails. (one of the few things I do remember about the '60's

) Since they were protected another idea gone wrong, there are now a limited number of trapping tags issued to help control the population. I think the SSS did a better job.

and btw,,,I am ignoring all this talk of neutering these poor creatures you ladies are discussing,,uggggg

Yep That is why i chose to use that Vet to get it done. She just has a mobile livestock practice. She did it in her garage. Porky was neutered on the tailgate of the truck. He is about 90 lbs so a bit heavy to move to her card table.
I can't find a vet that will spay the female and if/when I do I'm sure I couldn't afford it.
I really shouldn't have gotten her but my heart said go for it. I figure by getting her it will prevent stupid people from getting a female just to breed and contribute to the over population of pot bellies!!
Kind of why I like Mares. Keeping them out of the backyard breeders backyard !! lol
That's one of the reason's I'd like the female spayed. If for some reason I would need to rehome her I wouldn't want to see her used just for breeding. There are way to many people out there that just want the fast buck.
