Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

Finally something I can weigh in on (lurker here for months,,lol)

Fishers are pound for pound the nastiest predator in WI,,,the numbers have thinned here in the last 5 years, yes SSS hit the area Vilas/Oneida Cty

That said I still saw a few in the last year and they are my biggest fear now that I have a flock of layers and plan to pasture meat birds this summer.

They hunt and eat 24/7 and cover a large range. These critters will kill and eat cats, dogs, ducks, geese, chickens, corn, anything that fits the menu or the appetite. I've seen shed walls ripped open to get at a friends baby goats, sad day indeed.

IF you think you have one around, double check the coop, use extra heavy fencing/wire anywhere you even think there is a possible entry point, and, keep a loaded gun handy at all times at your backdoor. Most have been shot at b4 and will clear out even if you miss.

I deal with an abundance of coons (3 trapped in the last 2 weeks already), fox, coyotes, weasels, eagles, hawks, name it I have it,,,but the fishers are my biggest worry no doubt,,,,good luck

Oh yes, this thing was nasty and big for being in the weasel family. We've been on the look out for it but it doesnt seem to show itself when we happen to be looking for it. I guess I'll have to turn the coop into Fort Knox lol.

FT - yeah I meant fisher lol its called alot of different names. :)

Thanks for the info everyone.

Oh CC thanks for fixing my improper link. Oh and I thought I was the bestest. Bl4m have you figured out by now CC tells everyone that but I was the first followed by Bigz, then Jim I think. lol

Hey now! You're all the bestest in my book. What did Jim tell me once, "you're my favorite, just don't tell the other kids".

And I think you missed DrH & TO in that list.

I had a vet who offered to spay one of my female rabbits years ago because she had never done it before. No thanks, honey! I don't think so.

Fishers, martens and most weasels in general are just nasty little creatures. Very ruthless & devastating to a flock of poultry. My sis had 2 weasel attacks on her birds, and when I was a kid, my aunt & uncle had them take out almost every bird they had. Very scary little monsters. I think the porcupines were also eating up all the young trees that the forestry dept. & the timber companies were planting, so the fishers were reintroduced to keep their damage down since they were one of the only predators of porcupines.

Well I figured I'd reintroduce myself...
I was a member of BYC for a long time, then lost Internet at home about a year ago...Finally was able to get onto the Internet this weekend and came back to this site... oh how i missed it... no way will i ever catch up on all the missed info.. Anyway when I tried to log in it said my info was non existent so I had to resign up... so now I'm a newbie again....
We live in northern Wisconsin on about 50 acres of heaven... we have raised everything from all kinds of poultry, to pigs, horses, goats, and sheep...rabbits. and cattle. even pot belly pigs...
i would so love to become self sufficient and go off grid some day.... right now we are still in the process of 'trying to make a go of a simpler lifestyle' hence the no Internet for a year... come to find out it's needed... I don't know how we have went a year without it...
We have a fairly simple lifestyle...Most involves and revolves around our kids and animals... we have our animals for our kids as well as make a living with them...
We have named our little piece of heaven..."Run-A-Muck Ranch" and wouldn't have it any other way...
Nothing is perfect or even level here...lol Everything seems to be a work in progress that works... As well as a learning experience that we all learn from... My kids show in both FFA and 4H... My kids are also very knowledgeable about the animals and what they are for... Yes they get attached to the animals. All of them have names and their own personalities... But they also know that certain animals will eventually become food. They are very involved in that process...
Well that's probably enough for right now... When I figure this new site out I'm sure I will be back to my posting.... I have learned alot in a year without Internet and hope to share some of those things with everyone...(might be old news for everyone else as you've all had Internet lol)

It's OH SO GOOD TO BE BACK ON HERE.... I HAVE MISSED IT SOOOOOOOO MUCH

The first winter we were up here i caught a glimpse of a white critter fly by and it had a tip of black on it's tail. After investigating what it was it was I forget, but some kind of weasel. Cute little bugger, what i could ever see of it. They move so fast. I only saw it in the winter.

Anyway, after reading up on them it seems they kill for now reason and just leave the dead animals. Worse then cats do with the squirrels. At least they play with them for a while

Doesn't look like my EEr's or Dutch are going to hatch. They were due yesterday. They are all pullet eggs so will try again sometime. Just not now. I'm getting real tired of Poop !!!

Oh, before I forget I was at the Wausau Fleet Farm yesterday and they had the Seven 5 Dust for $4 on clearance and the three pack for $9 in case anyone wants to check to see if it is on clearance at their Fleet Farm. I don't remember if it was one or two lb containers though.

Thanks Frenchie! I did not know the stuff from fleet was FG. I have the white FG DE that is fit for human consumption (so they say)..... not that I am going to start eating it though!

So Fishers are as close as Outagamie County? Great..... glad the ducks are in an elevated pen with decent latches.

Welcome unkadan and apyl!

Hi RunAmuck.. I remember you.. I am thinking Hurley area ? we have a couple of new members from the north..

we all had to re-apply to byc.. a few weeks ago byc revamped their whole system..I had to actually go get a computer and a provider because my MSN dial up wouldn't work on byc anymore..

I never actually operated a computer, so this is all new to me..

I am playing a lot of solitaire to get better at using a mouse..

............jiminwisc..........

Sandi, that white thing you saw was an ermine .. You will see them only in the winter time, because in the summer, their coat turns brown again and then they are called weasels.

Not Hurley area... but yes I remember you too... Somehow when I re registered... I forgot to put a space in my user name...lol Muck and Ranch should be separate...lol
Anyway... Our little piece of heaven is between Menomonie and Rice Lake...
It is nice to be back onto this site...I have missed so much...
