Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

guess what, guess what!!!!

just came in from the coop and EVERYBODY not only laid good eggs but they were all
in the boxes!

Just an FYI. The hen that was having the recent "misfire" and "just not feeling well" issue wasn't the one having the vent gleet problem, of course
hu.gif
. I have done all I can for her, Oxine, fungicide, still giving her (and everyone else) the ACV water with no real change. She is still laying, eating well, socializing and just otherwise happy so I just wash her bottom, spray her poor bare butt with Blu Kote and keep an eye on her skin for any problems from the "leakage". Otherwise, all her other feathers have grown back in (they started on her bottom but one of the other hens was attracted by her white "clumps" and pulled them out again
roll.png
~up side, at least she no longer gets build up of the "paste" anymore), her dry skin is now normal and she has a nice shine. She is showing improvement in that her vent looks totally normal now for a laying hen with nothing "poking out" when she would flex. As long as she seems happy and has good quality of life, I am just going to let nature take it's course. If/when she shows signs of decline, well then I will do what is right.

Don't know if someone else may have shared this but I was at Copp's grocery store on Saturday and there sat Bragg's organic ACV right on the shelf and it was even on sale! Kewl

Did anyone see the big article in the Sunday papers "Federal bill would give chickens larger cages" ? There is a compromise bill moving thru that is modeled after the one made into law in California (prop. 2 in 2008) requiring egg producers to give chickens cages large enough to stretch, perch, scratch and flap their wings. If you get a chance, it's an interesting read. Should be able to view it @ www.greenbaypressgazette.com or checking out the AP site.

to everyone with the new babies! If I can't have my own little furry babies at least I can enjoy the pics from all of you. Keep them coming, pretty please? I guess I am going to HAVE to go to the swap if just to get the chance to play with the babies

They sure do, and I've found it at the little Amish food store in Reedsville for just a tad less in price. I wonder if the unit price is much different by the gallon? Lord knows the birds go thru more of it than the humans here.

BL4, see you lurking, what about the duckies???

ACV Bennies: no algae growth in water, deters internal worms, and is an overall health tonic. I put about 1 TB per gallon; I never measure, just slosh some in when filling things up. It's really good for people too, although mighty tough to get down straight. Worse than whiskey. BUT a shot of it will take away the pain of a sore throat instantly.

Good morning....just came in to refill coffee and LOAD THE .22!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Yeah! I got a racoon last night in the trap--FINALLY! I have to take care of it quick while DD26 is away cause she doesnt want me to shoot it. Right--it ate one of my calls, a mess of eggs, three 10 week only ducks, wounded a muskovy hen badly and also for one guinea (but not sure on that one!) So I finally got it with a duck egg, can of tunafish and a cookie and a marshmallow! I set two traps...one kind of as a pre-trap so I could get it befor it got to the ducks. It has a different route than I thought cause the last 3 duck eggs were eaten in the box....unless there are more...which I hope to find out tonight. I hate killing stuff, but this one has earned it!
that darn coon ate better in the trap than what i had for dinner last night!

was this a post from a long time ago and I didnt pay attention to what page the update e-mail took me to? lol

Yes I am lurking; I had this site up and then my BIL decided to start an argument on FB, then my kids spilled my coffee all over the top of my dresser..... so I was temporarily distracted.

Update: the baby calls are s-l-o-w-l-y making their way out of the shells..... we had one that the shell was stuck to so the kids were calling it turtle-duck. Only one DOA that I can tell, but it was like that last night. I'll post pics when I can..... momma is one pissy mamma! A good thing too; I am glad she takes her job seriously. I find it interesting that these babies are all (so far) silver colored.... these are all Taffy x Checkers babies, so one would think that there would still be a black one or two out of the bunch.

It amazes me how quickly these babies grow. The two week olds are 3x the size of these new babies. I hope the little ones do not get picked on too much by the older babies.

Checkers is still living in the dog kennel. A good place for him.

I'll check back later with the duckling report!

Hi Bigfam!
right now I am using ACV @ 2 Tbl. per gallon because that is what I was told by helpful folks on the vent gleet thread was recommended by their vet for vent gleet but intend to back off to 1 TBL soon. I also still do the Oxine in their water once a week. And, of course I agree with Amy it is a great overall "tonic" with the biggest benefit for me anyway, is that it keeps the ladie's "plumbing" in a bit of an acidic state thus warding of fungal infections etc. which also might help head off sour crop. Also loaded with antioxidents, good for their skin, feathers, etc. It has really helped me get all the girls in a healthier condition.
Just do a search for ACV and you will get tons of good info.
BTW~I also put it in the water once a week for my puppy and kitty. Good for them too!

OOPS! Important

don't put ACV in galvanized or other metal containers. It is a natural acid (like any vinegar) and will eat at the containers contaminating your water supply.

My duck eggs came today. I'm giving my Australian Spotted ducks a try again. I am going to experiment with them. I'm going to incubate on their sides, and hand turn. I got a really good info sheet with them on differences in incubating these eggs. It should be 100 degrees, it's 26 days instead of 28, it's 63% humidity until lockdown. Interesting stuff! So I'm going to split them between 2 bators. The Brinsea I can set the temp which is helpful. Washing these last silkie eggs gave me a decent hatch. I know they say not to wash, but it really helped me. These eggs came to me lightly washed already since I described my problem last time with bacteria. I am really hoping for some duckies!

after the ducks hatch, IM PACKING UP ALL THE INCUBATORS AND LOCKING THEM IN A BOX!!!

Well, my sick dog decided today was a good day to start walking around. He hasn't walked more than a few steps in probably 2 weeks, and now is everywhere. He falls over and is really wobbly, but walking! Vet's don't even know what's wrong with him, they just said that since he wasn't 'suffering' that we should just hand feed and water him and see where he goes. He's only 3. Poor guy :/

I'm so glad he's feeling better. Could he have gotten bit by a tick?

The only other thing I could think of is an ear infection, but I'm sure that was the vet's first assumption. Anyway, I hope he continues to improve!
