Vicki... I mentioned the cold bath

But yea, you don't dunk her head but you got to cool her body temp down. Broody hens get hot! (Think hot flash the dosen't go away!) You may have to do it a few days in a row.

BTW.... would loved to have seen the "Mad Hen!" need video!

Cind, you got your numbers drawn 3 times, didn't you? I thought you told Terri to draw another number. It was definitely your lucky day! I hope your hen continues to heal & go undetected until she can go back with the others in the coop.

Carol, I hope you're feeling better.

DrH, loved the news headline about FT, just hope I don't wind up reading it in the real news.

H&R, ouch! Your poor little guy! I hope he's feeling better soon. Sleeping might be a bit rough. Give him a

Still sharpening those mower blades, eh, Jim? What did you run over this time?

Sunday?????????? You're having the bash on a Sunday? Oh lord...........

The critters and I am so loving this weather. The lav roos are feeling frisky to the point where sense has left the building, though. One of them tried making a move on one of Mooses kids, Mini Moo, and she did not find it one bit amusing. Her & the roo were sparring like a couple of roosters for a while.

They finally settled down, but she was still plenty ticked at him.

I gave her a good looking over & was glad to see she was fine. She is one tough cookie. Must get it from her mom.

I have been feeling crazy tired the past few days, so I better feed the fuzz butts & get to bed, on my freshly laundered sheets. *Sigh* Sweet dreams, all!

I just did the same thing to some broodies...ones that hatched chicks then epically failed taking care of them. Into the creek they went. Some gave it up after one dunk, the last one I dunked 3-4 times.

She's a terrible mom, smushed more than one baby. She finally gave up yesterday, thank God.

BL4, what is that FB page of yours???

I have the part time broody. I dunk her and she is ok for a day...then back in next box next day, but might wander off at night to perch, then back to next later...weird birds. At least my one Bo that loves being broody, does well with her chicks. She just hit a year and has been broody three times...is that normal. Whereas my silkies refuse to go broody

Hi ALL!

Vicki... sounds like you had an "interesting day" She may break on her own.... in a month or so, maybe.

Bf4m... congrats on the new little egg/s!

H&R.... Ouch! Poor kid... kinda' puts a damper on the next week or so.

Jim... congrats on the peachick!

Cs... glad your home.

TO... congrats on all the ribbons!!! Feels cool when you can beat out some of the ones who have been entering for years...LOL

CC... yep, I took the first 2 but when they drew the 3rd I figured they better mix 'em up better! Someone else got drawn 3 times too later on. Yep... those Roos have to learn... no means NO! LOL

Well, Rose, the disappearing wounded chicken showed up today with her face all pecked up!
barnie.gif
she's OK but looks terrible! I cleaned her up and she's back in the other pen. Have no clue what happen.

OK people.... pull out you hankies and grab a chicken to hug!

Good Morning Everyone! Good idea Jim on the spensive eggs to break the broody. cs glad you had a safe trip! Cind seems that Rose is a scraper. Just had a yote freak out the hens. I heard the panic cry and went to look saw ears cross an over grown road ran and grabbed a gun went out and had a quick shot but someone didn't take the safety off. So I winged a few into a brush pile. Hope that was enough to deter it. All three roo's ran right into the area to protect the hens. Good but stupid! That brought the heart rate up. Thinkin of sittin in the deer condo with my rabbit distress call in the mornings. Now I forgot everything I read. Going to pull the rotten boards off the dry well and fill it in today. I get to play with the tractor I get to play with the tractor!

Morning all!
Just catching up before my chores! Haven't checked the chickens yet this morning but I hear one laying so I know at least one is doing her job....I've been getting little itty bitty white pullets eggs that last couple of days so one of the Andie's is starting to lay.
Fred-Dog is outside and does not want to come in. He is happy to air out the stink so to speak since it's nice and cool this morning. He is just looking over the neighborhood enjoying the fresh air!

TO-Congrats on the ribbons! Good job!

Jim, BBP,BL4 and others-I completely agree with all of you btw. So while I agree that coop fees/permits are stupid, I suggested that to BL4 because from what I have heard from the people in the seminars we do, that is one of the ways that city and towns folk have gotten ordinances passed. Like it or not money talks. If the town is willing to change the ordinance for an extra $25 bucks per year when before they were against the idea, then I say go for it. Since chickens are being seen more and more as pets, then as pets they will start fall under certain provisions that they normally would not. Look at mini horses and pot bellies. They are technically livestock but considered companion animals so they have different rules in certain cities and towns.
The important thing here is that if she (BL4) decides to take on her township to get the ordinances changed then she needs to research and make a case debunking all of her cities fears and display poultry ownership as a positive thing for her community and not a nightmare that towns automatically think it is. Town councils automatically envision a " commercial egg farm" ideal when they hear "I want to keep backyard chickens/ducks" and not the actual reality of a backyard flock. This is what she is up against. If the town is "on the fence" after her argument for backyard chickens/ducks then a coop permit might be the thing that gets them to vote in her favor.
So while we believe that it's our" right to keep and bear chickens!", the reality is that it's not in the eyes of the zoning /ordinance department. So we need to play by their rules (however stupid that may be) to get the ordinances changed in the favor of our Feathered Friends.

Cind-cute video!

Vicki-I agree with Casie. 3-4 days in a wire cage should do the trick with your broody hen. If she still is broody after the first go then you might have to place her in the cage for a little bit longer. I keep SG in her cage for about 7 days since she is pretty persistent in her brood.

Well, best be off to take care of the critters!
Later!

Yes CC.... Sunday for the mini bash. Sports for kids happen mostly on Saturdays. In September Soccer and football games are the prime concerns. I figured since its a mini bash, the drinking will not be heavy. Just a nice little luncheon. Sunday will be fine. I'm sure even those of you with long drives will be able to stay awake long enough to get home when lunch is at noon... :p

I'm playing duck pick up and delivery service today. However, Carols phone seems to be out of service! I swear... naughty words will be spewed forth if I don't get a hold of her....!
