Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

my poor little crockpot is still moulting and still has a mostly bare butt and a few quills. Thought the rest were done but the last couple days my garden area looks like someone had a bazaar pillow fight! My hunters have all gone home, my thanksgiving cooking is behind me and it's just me and my sweet hunter now. Tomorrow is processing the spike buck. It's too warm to let it hang any longer, just wierd for this time of year but I'm lovin' it. All the fall work is done so the rest of the week I actually get to do whatever I want and just enjoy what's left of the nice weather. Oh, and I got an email today and my Kindle Fire HD 8.9 has shipped early and I should get it by Wednesday

Well I'm on the laptop and hate typing on this thing so I'm going to quit for now. night night all!

first the hunting... as expected 6 year old boys can not sit still or be quiet so none sighted today. We met the neighbor with his sons 14 and 10 they came to track a deer the father had hit Saturday late and followed blood trail to the fence. With 5 of us someone could always stand on the last spot and it went quickly. After about a quarter mile we found him a huge 9 pointer, I couldn't get my fingers all the way around his main beams and the longest tines were more than 10 inches. The neighbor is new to hunting deer and the area so this was his first buck. I was glad for his finding it for that alone.

second, orpingtons... I have been told that they are the golden retriever of the chicken world. All the fear and fight response bread out of them.

third, roosters on hens. I think like any animal with a personality some are better at mating than others. My cochin roos where terrible at it like they did not know what to do along with being huge and uncoordinated my hens were getting as bald as me so the boys had to go. The ameraucanas were varied though one was abusive and one one was sneaky and quick.

I get to hunt alone in the morning YEAH!!!!!!!!

Deer that is. hunt deer.

Ghost-I had quite a few with bare backs-thought they were just not going to moult or had already. Somehow they slowly have moulted. Then this one hen-suddenly went thru a major moult. I swear I think she dropped all her feathers ina couple fo days it seems like. She is so pathetic though-shes shivering and even looked weak today-she would stand off by herself and would look like her legs would just give out! I gave them some mealworms and BOSS hoping the extra protein will help. Tried cuddling her on her roost tonight to warm her a lil but shes my least friendly hen (scared). Poor thing. I need to take pics-never had one with this major of a moult.
Ang, a hard molt is incredibly stressing to a chicken's immune system, making them much more susceptible to getting sick. I just lost an otherwise healthy hen during an extremely hard molt a few weeks ago. She looked and acted normal, but I found her in a nest box where she had spent the night (she had never done that before). Keep a close eye on her & try to keep her protein intake up if you can. Good luck.

Kristi, that is interesting about your BO being so broody. Neither of mine have ever gone broody yet, and they are 3. I specifically wanted them because I read they went broody often.

Our egg production fluctuates on a daily basis too lately. One day we'll get 10 to 12, the next day 5 or 6.

Vicki, isn't the Nu-Stock working, or haven't you tried it on Crockpot?

JJ, "I have been told that they are the golden retriever of the chicken world. All the fear and fight response bread out of them". Tell that to my Rose. She is my alpha hen in the flock and the biggest b!tch to the newbies.

Her sister comes in second. But they are sweet to me.

Terri, yeah, I saw him too. I saw him a couple days ago also. He was talking but I had the speakers muted & was busy, so I didn't pay much attention.

Babylady, I found an interesting article that said that chocolate is very good for the skin. I think you mentioned you were going to try making some chocolate soap? Hope it turned out good for you. Here is the link if you're interested. No recipes on making soap, though.

Nothing new around here again. Got a few things done outside before the game. That was yet another ugly win. The injuries are starting to take their toll. Wonder what Crosby's excuse has been lately?
The chicks are doing well out by the adults. They are catching on by watching their older sisters & Jack. And they are not as deathly afraid of the rabbits as they were yesterday.

Other than that, I got nothing. Sweet dreams, all!

DH got his Doe late this morning, so we have 5 deer total so far. DH is going out again tomorrow..... the kids would like to go again this week but I have no idea when we would fit that in with the dual Thanksgiving celebrations.

CC, I will have to make that chocolate soap now! I picked up some cocoa butter to add into the soap. I can just envision what it would look and smell like...... just add a little cocoa powder for texture..... yummy! I did get one batch made today. I am out of distilled water so I will have to remember to bring my jug with me to work.

That is about it for me. Getting a cold...... NOT what I need right now, especially this week!

I hope it turns out the way you want it to. It sounds awesome. Good luck! Oh, I keep forgetting to tell you, I really, really liked the texture of that coffee soap you made for the Bigz bash 2 years ago. Very exfoliating!

I hope you feel better real soon too.

Hi All!

Again... congrats on the deer and hope you get one to those who didn't. And don't forget, if you didn't get one you can go to the store and buy your meat where they make it there and no animals were harmed! (I'm never going to get over that one!

Checked in on the "kitty cam" looks like they got their room cleaned. A new blanket is down and things are moved a bit. Camera is set back a bit more too. Looks like they're all sleeping in the "fish tent".

Got some cleaning done and my bath in, so I'm clean and tired. Got to make the chicken mash then time for bed.... night!

GOOD MORNING EVERYONE,

checked the kitty cam and yes they cleaned up. I missed the human but all the kittens and mom are sleeping.

congrats to all the hunters our there.

thanks for all the orfington info.sounds like they are nice generally. i do like the golden comets but think perhaps they are bred to lay at such a fast rate, that takes a toll on their life span.

Back to work today. My club at school is in charge of feeding 150 teachers tomorrow so tonight I have to do a lot of prep work
Discovered son number 1 has been skidding a lot with his tires and he needs new ones. Thinking he needs those more than any other Christmas gift. Hopefully we will get a little snow before Christmas so he can see what skidding does to his traction.

the girls are starting to go out more. I wish I had more money now, I would cover the coop in the nice weather as opposed to a few months. but oh well Christmas comes first.

have a good day

Good Morning Everyone! Not too awake yet. Congrats on all the hanging meat! Most of my moulters have quit losing feathers except for Goldie. Glad to see Peatwo finally getting some back. He spent the whole summer with bald areas. And really hoping the antibiotics cures his Bumble foot. He's about half way with that. Thought of a caption. I'm tellin ya it's not as big as YOU think it is. Nice lookin birds GR! That's all I can think of right now, need more java. Going over to Donny's today to fix his wood stove chimney. The same guy that "fixed" his toilet installed the chimney and it's falling apart. There's that look of surprise on my face again. Told him to stop asking the guy to help him.
