BigFam- Thanks! yea, ironically the one I kept was the biggest instigator- if he hadn't been free, I'd probably name him 50cent. That pic of him isn't great, but he is rather purty I think. What kind do you think he is (anyone, to include Jim who invited me and never hears anything I say, lol?)? Legs are blue, that's a standard size Americauna beside him far as I know, and he has no speckling on his neck like some I've seen that look otherwise similiar. Hope your roos are ok.

DrH- I know, right? I think if Snooze would've taken over I wouldn't have had the heart to do him in and wudda kept 2....

I think it's cool to try and guess the mixtures in this situation with receiving mixed chickens. In the pic with mom and three chicks; is that a sussex or a deleware or what and why does she have the mohawk on her head? (anyone)?.... the one with the three chicks. If you look at the chicks, the roo on the right looks alot like his rose comb dad, but dad is solid black still runnin' loose in the woods of Exeline or Exeland. The hen on the left is colored that way as well but has her mom's mohawk, the middle one has had the best personality of them ever since they were fuzzy chicks when we gottem.

I am back.. I spent over an hour outside.. way too nice to waste it being inside.. I got the brooder in the big lean to fixed up with a heater on the thermo cube.. fresh bale of hay and we transferred 3 peacocks, 18 guineas and 1 turkey from the pen outside to it.. they are all big enough to be turned loose,, but they have never been loose and I don't think they have the smarts to go in at night.. after a week or so, I will let them loose in the lean to with the door closed.. by then they will /should consider it "home"..

the heater already shut off.. I put my hand into the pen and it was warm in there.. their water should not freeze up anymore..

we left the cluck and her almost grown up chicks in the outside pen.. If she would go in at night, I would turn her loose.. but last week she slept under the deck.. unacceptable,, back into the pen..

dogs learn by accident as well as on purpose.. If I put the dog out to pee, and if he barks in a little while, I do not let my dog in.. I do not cater to a barking dog.. If he stays quiet for at least 15 minutes, I call him in,,,we do things on MY terms.. It isn't hard to train a dog,, YOU have to know what you want..

I set up the heater on a thermo cube in the main coop too.. I will turn it on at night when I lock up the birds.. later on when the birds are not going out any more, I will leave it on 24/7..

yup weather is interesting,,,low this morning was 14º warm here up north I guess,,,,now near 30 and a few shots of sunshine, some of the girls came out

got some pullet eggs from the new WA's,,,one is a really nice blue, I am going to build some trap nests to get the best eggs for color from both these and my Marans, leg bands are on order for keeping things straight, didn't have them in my size though

finally starting on fodder, had most of the things around here I needed, got a small pump and now soaking the 1st tray of seeds,,oats were local and easy, I will get some wheat later in the week when I hit the feed mill

As we head into winter along the IL/WI border, I have 3 hens and we are considering what to do from here. We still only have 2 of the 3 laying and in February they'll be a year old. We do not have the room for too many more (maybe 2-3 more), but what is the best thing: kill off these 3 and get 6 or get 3 new ones (and what ages)????

kill the one not laying, get 4 more that are laying to bring you up to max of 6..

I do not know which one it is that isn't laying. They all go in there and sit, but only 2 poop an egg!

It kind of looks like a Colombian Wyandotte, at least the adult. But what do I know, I thought the bantams didn't fly much

Kristip, there are some really good puppy training books out there (I have Puppies for Dummies) and all of you can keep your comments to yourselves.... I would watch Caesar Milan as well. He is spot on with his approach; treat the dog as the inferior member of the pack and use DOG psycology not people psycology. Your kids can help too, keep reminding them that this puppy will become a bigger dog and will be more difficult to control when he is older. You should NOT play tug-of-war with a puppy until they have learned the command 'drop it!'. The winner of those battles is the dominant dog, and the last thing you need is a puppy/dog that thinks it is above your kids. Make the dog uncomfortable when he has misbehaved, Jim is also absolutely correct in how to discipline a dog/puppy. That is how a mother dog makes puppy mind. Yipping like a puppy when a hand is bitten is the right thing to do along with telling the puppy NO!

Play with the dogs toes, ears, mouth, feet, every single day. Do everything they will do to the dog at the vet's office (except the thermometer and shots of course). This will make your life MUCH easier when you need to trim toenails, check teeth, check ears, and make the vet soooooooo much more appreciative to have a willing patient instead of running the risk of getting nipped.

When I was training Trixie, I had a long rope attached to her collar and the other attached to my pants and I would carry a small baggie of liver treats in my pocket. Everywhere I went the dog went. I knew when she had to go to the bathroom, I could teach her all the time the commands of 'sit' 'come' 'stay' and the corresponding hand signals. Of course she still follows me everywhere but I would gladly have a well trained dog than one that causes problems. I have been able to take her for walks without a leash and also take her to the vet without a leash.


Interesting day..... but the massage was the highlight. I really needed that............

Hello everyone!
Nothing much new here. All the animals seem to be handling the cold just fine even though I don't have a heat lamp in there. Getting around 3-4 eggs per day from my 17 chickens.
Had a pretty big scare this weekend. At 2am when our first shift milkers came to work our 2 fainting goats and mini-horse were out and by the road. He managed to round them up, and put them in the barn. Well that was very nice of him, but we feed our cows Rumensin(sp) which according to the vet can be fatal to horses. I was freaking out thinking about all the hours poor Cosmo had been eating the feed. My DH called the vet and they said there was nothing that can be done. We would just have to wait and see. Well so far so good. i don't know how soon something would happen if it was going to though... We have a latch on the gate to the pen that holds all the chickens, the goats and the horse, and a board wedged against it for extra measure. We think the milk man got too close when he picked up the milk at midnight and knocked the board loose. His tracks were VERY close to the pen, which I do not understand since he has a ton of room to back in there. Ugh- just keeping my fingers crossed.
Still recovering from my shopping marathon on Friday, and my Fibro is acting up terribly. Going to take some pills and go to bed.
