Wisconsin International Poultry Show

The eldest DS and I visited this show for about 1.5 hours. I have never seen so many Call Ducks in one place before. Very cute, but would be loved to death by my cats.

We found no Large Fowl Delawares, Sussexes or Dorkings. This was disappointing, as we are still looking for more local (Minnesota/Wisconsin border) for these breeds. I guess we just picked a breed that isn't popular here.

There were a few Welsummers. Ours appear to be in line with these, to my very un-trained eye. We'll find out next year when we begin to show them at our small local fair (we'll get the judge to let us have it on what needs improving.)

There were a few Ameraucana birds, which had much fuller beards than ours. So we know what to work on there. And looking at them helped me place the gender of our 16 week old birds (I'm still having trouble guessing one.)

There were more Australorps, RIR, and Cochins in the standard/large fowl breeds. And of course 3 times as many bantams as standard/large fowl birds.

There were a very few Buckeyes, Faverolles, Jerseys, crested breeds.

So the DS made his case for keeping our Hatchery Sussex cockerel (now officially named Arthur) at least through next year, as "he seems to be the best Speckled Sussex Rooster around, even if that means he is probably the only Speckled Sussex Rooster around."

Our Delawares will only keep their place if they prove to be less human-aggressive. They are currently starting to get a look in their eye that I do not trust.

I think we will try to get some Delawares from Sand Hill Preservation in the spring, as I just do not see our current birds measuring up.
