Wisconsin ordinances changed, I'm gettn chickens!

Hey guys, I am from Portage county Wisconsin,ordinances were just changed allowing egg-laying chickens!! Yippie! It's a great thing considering I live in the MIDDLE of the country!! Anyway don't know alot about chickens but am doing my home work. I will be asking questions on housing, food . I have a 8x10 lean-to with lattice work on the one side and a chain link pen on the front, used to be a old dog kennel. I think I will have to make some kind of boxes correct? I will be looking for a friendly chicken that will lay all winter here. I have an 8 yr. old son who will be my partner so a friendly chicken is a must, cool-looking chickens are a bonus! Also looking for info on lower cost but good feeds! Anyway I'm sure alot of this info is on the forum once I start reading. I'll have tons of questions I'm sure, but wanted to introduce myself and say HI!! Thanks, Mitch

Hi - I'm from Wisconsin also, but a bit more south than you are. I live in a rural area, and we can have cattle and whatever we want. I also wanted some winter hardy chickens. For my main egglaying, I have 23 Silver Spangled Hamburg. (There are 16 people in our family, plus some friends want eggs.) For the grandchildren, I got some Amercaunas and some Plymouth Rocks. I ordered all pullets for the grands, but 3 turned out to be cockerels after they had fallen in love. I might be stuck with a few more roosters than I need! However, one of the kids - a 4 y.o. - is my best helper. He named his Plymouth Barred Rock Cupcake, thinking it would be a pullet. Well, Cupcake is the tamest cockerel I have ever had! The 4 y.o. is very gentle, and held Cupcake regularily - often for a whole hour - while Cupcake slept and ate out of his hand. Now, Cupcake jumps into laps whenever available. I just am hoping the great personality holds as he becomes a rooster!

, congrats on the ordinance change. Chickens are awesome pets, I love mine. I have a lot of different breeds, like the looks of a mixed flock. Good luck.

from WI....I have winterhardy dual purpose breeds but a 'mini-flock'. They are decent egg layers, laid in winter as well just a bit less. I have Golden Laced Wyandottes and everyone that sees them is amazed as they are beautiful. Two out of the 3 are very friendly, one is a bit more stand-offish. I also have an EE and they come in all colors, love the green eggs. The EE and Wyandottes hace peacombs so less risk of frostbite in winter. Barred Rocks are good layers but I only have one, also have a Wheaten Marans, love the chocolate brown eggs. Some folks I used to get eggs from swear by Brahmas, Rhode Island Reds and sex-links as hardy for our climate and laying well. You'll find lots of info here
