wisdom or wives tail?

I agree with the other posters. I started out with 6 pullets and they layed fine. I bought 25 more from a hatchery and one of the supposed to be pullets turned out to be a cockerel. I did eventually re-home him. I saw no difference in egg production. I think it has a lot to do with the breeds. Some breeds are better layers than others. Now I have over 200 birds.

Old wive's tale. As far as a rooster goes. I love the crowing and I love watching him with his girls. Chicken dynamics are very interesting to watch. And roosters are so gorgeous.

I have four new pullets and only three of the hang out together. The fourth one has asserted herself into the group of 7 "old girls" and for the most part they have accepted her.

Thanks for all your great input!
I can't have roosters where I live so I was a litter concerned about my dad's comment, but I guess I don't really have to worry. It's also good to know I might be overthinking the even/odd thing. I had five chickens but when one turned out to be a boy, I had to swap him out with a friend for some chicks. I ended up getting three chicks because I didn't want to raise one alone and two would make an odd number. Now I have seven chickens--more than I had planned!
