Hi! I am a mother of 3 young kids, and we’re looking to move to North Carolina soon. I have dreamed of owning chickens (and maybe a few more animals down the road) for almost 10 years. I joined to learn as much as I can now that we can finally move to a property to allow for new chickie friends.

Hello and welcome to BYC! :frow Glad you joined.
Happy St. Patrick's Day!
The first lesson you should learn is to build your coop and run FIRST, then get chickens.
Build the coop such that there is 4 sq ft, 1 linear foot of roost space and 1 sq ft (minimum) of ventilation per bird.
Build the run with 15 sq ft per bird (bigger is much better). This applies even if you plan to free range.
It is best to have a solid roof on the run so that it stays dry. I always recommend building the run as secure as the coop so the pop door can remain open as that greatly reduces how often the coop needs to be cleaned and allows the chickens to go outside as soon as they come off the roost in the morning.
Also, poop boards are a chicken keepers best friend!
