It’s been an eggciting week! Our first chicks, White Jersey Giants, decided to lay way ahead of my anticipations! They’re about 21 weeks old and we couldn’t be more excited

It turns out the first eggs I thought belonged to the both are actually from Snowflake 😅 She is a very dedicated layer and hasn’t missed a day yet. I was soooooo close to seeing her lay on Saturday. Very fussy about fixing the nest just so, moving feathers and bigger shavings in, then out… So far her eggs are pretty small

Fluffy on the other hand is far less consistency and builds up to much bigger eggs, a lovely orange hue. She was also the first to squat for me and has been much more interested in scritches on her bum than Snowflake, as well as bigger comb/wattles

I’ve been trying to watch one of them laying and it’s just such a long process, not easy with kids 😂 But made it out at just the right moment! I was worried she was going broody because she usually lays earlier and grumbling. Feel around under her and nothing, shift her aside a bit since she buried her last egg under the shavings… As soon as I stepped back, she glared, plopped it right out, and stalked off in a huff. The speckles are amazing!

First time I’ve had to batten down the coop even though we’ve been through several storms already. The little clamps on the hoop make it so easy to add an extra layer! No eggs today either, unless they laid them really late

Found the perfect scrap of fencing behind our shed for giving the babies a little more room. Hoping the Dottes don’t decide to just hop over and be turds. I need a video stream from the coop now… (The heat lamp is wired in and only on while I water, it melts the ice from the rims so I can open the stupid waterers)

I swear these two wait until I come out every morning to lay their eggs! Doesn’t matter how early or late, they are impatiently waiting for me to stand there while they fuss and primp the nest. Today, both decided it needed to be now 🙄
