With a little help from my friends - New Coop Under Construction!

caf.gif
Doo doo dooo.....

Have you been paying attention? We're having a monsoon here! I am drenched just walking THROUGH TWO INCHES OF WATER to the new coop! Good thing all the coops are raised at least six inches; glad the new one is raised two feet.

I can tell y'all that the BCM roo and his BCM lady are obviously the first permanent occupants. They don't care there's no pine shavings on the floor or in the nest boxes. Or that the walls need to be primed and painted. They love the roost bar. And the shelter.

While I was inside checking things out (and letting water drip from me onto the vinyl), one of the Splash JG roos came in the chicken door to see what was going on. Yah, it's gonna be tomorrow before I get around to opening the can of Killz2 primer.

We had weeks like that out here (except ours was SNOW), so you have my sympathies. I hope it stops raining soon and you can get the painting done.

I agree. I am so very happy that the flock is taking to the new coop! I think that they will be most happy and comfy in there.

Thanks so much for posting your step-by-step pics - I'm planning an 8 x 8 very similar to yours, and trying to calculate lumber needed, etc. so it's helped to see the framing. I see you used corrugated roof material - is that metal? How expensive? Is paint likely to last on that - I'd be afraid it would peel. I've been gathering free shingles from freecycle and craigslist - was planning to use those. How much overall would you say you spent to build it? Thanks!

Ahhhh, PM Farmer_Lew, as he is the Master Builder and he put together the materials list. The corrugated panels are plastic, or some poly-something that is effectively plastic (in my non-construction-based mind). Not cheap. It has a very long rating, being UV resistant, and comes in several colors. No peeling.

Overall, I've spent about $700.00 for materials, which are all new - any person savvy with craigslist, freecycle, and ReStore resources could save a ton of money. I purchased everything new from Lowe's, where they know me from several backyard projects, including two previous coops I built all by myself.

We're hoping to get something similar built within the first couple of months that we are out in foothills, along with about a 12 x 20 run, as there will be times we won't be able to let the chickens out to free range & we'll need something predator-proof. There are predators in the foothills we don't face here in the middle of the urban jungle.
