Hello BYC'ers - I'd like to thank everyone for all your knowledge, I found it all very helpful as I am a new chicken-addict and didn't know what to do or how to start my chicken adventure.

I do have a question: I had to cover/block off my nesting boxes as my chicks were actually having a "mosh pit" in them at night. They are now 11 1/2 weeks old, and are roosting on the roost bars at night. I am wondering when I should uncover them, so the boxes will be open for them to actually lay eggs in. I don't want to uncover them too early as I fear they will go back to their "mosh pit" sleeping behavior in the nesting boxes?

Some chickens begin to lay as early as 14 weeks, some 16 weeks and most at 20 weeks. I'd uncover them in a week or two so they have time to get used to them.

I'm laughing so hard right now I'm sorry! I have mental pictures of little chicks in torn jeans and spiked hair passing each other around on their shoulders as others leap backwards off of the roosts!
