Woke up to a new flock member this morning

Unfortunately the space I had dedicated to the hatching effort is now required for getting seeds started for the veggie garden.

Sorry! I meant order or buy a few chicks, not incubate and hatch more. They could go right in the same brooder. Even 2-3 from your farm store if they have any. Ideal’s minimum is about 7 if you buy in the $4 range. ($30 minimum) Don’t know if you want that many or how many you originally set.

3 days after hatching, looking at the flight feathers, should I be thinking pullet? Dad is a White Leghorn, with Mom most likely a Buff Orpington.. though a Rhode Island Red is also a possibility.View attachment 2980296

Cute little fluff ball!

Wing feather sexing is only partially reliable in specific breeds where the breeder has maintained breeding for that trait.

I guess I have more reading to do on the genetics involved. Oh well...in the meantime I'm going with "she" unless/until I find out differently.

We just came in from a field trip out to my pasture where we plopped down in a nice patch of grass, weeds and dirt so she could peck at the grass and chase the little bugs that flit around in the dirt. Holy cow, did she get a kick out of that. I really got an earful when I finally scooped her up and brought her back inside. Even at 3 days old you can see the latent velociraptor in them. Clever girl.
