I foster momma dogs and her puppies and I am fostering this one and have had her since she had given birth to the pups on Halloween and I woke up this morning to glass breaking from another room so I got up thinking my husband had dropped something. When I went into the living room he was sitting there and I asked if he had broken anything and he said he hasn't moved and didn't hear anything so I thought I was dreaming. So I went and got my coffee sat by the fire to read the paper and we heard a scratching from the garage door where the puppies and mom and YES my birds. Then panic set in I new then I wasn't dreaming about the glass breaking. So I jumped up went running to the garage to find a scene from a horror movie.
She had crawled over my carboys of wine I make and had knocked them down breaking them sending 12 gallons of wine all over the floor and all the cages I kept all my quail in on the floor with them totally destroyed and her wagging her tail like she had done something good!!!!!!
I started screaming so loud out of panic for my birds knowing there was nothing I could do to help them and boy did she book it in the other direction. I know it's nature for a dog but I just can't believe she jumped out of the pen we have kept all mom and puppies in, crawled over large bottles just to get to them.
I am so heart broken because I take my quail to a center that helps Down Syndrome kids, retirement homes and this Sat with the Down Syndrome kids they are having a xmas party and we were going and they were making little outfits for them HOW THE HECK DO I EXPLAIN THIS?? I have no idea and hoping they will understand but I'm not sure I should tell them there or just wait and take the puppies???

Unfortunately, I am reminded of a story that my bird sitter told me about our vet's bird. He and his wife (also a vet) foster dogs as well. Over the years she would tell me stories about his parrotlet and the parrotlet's antics. Then one visit she said that the parrotlet landed in front of a foster dog and the dog just bent down and ate the bird. Gone.

I know it will be hard, but as you are cleaning up the mess, try to focus on the positives and how you are helping the mama and her puppies. They will go to great homes and bring joy and love to others.

Maybe you could just tell the kids that the birds aren't feeling well and couldn't come? I guess you aren't really lying...

Maybe someone here could quickly replace or loan you some birds.
