Wondering about 3 breeds: Easter Eggers, Wyandottes, and Australorps?

I have 8 RIRs (production reds), 7 EEs, 4 GLWs and 3 SLWs. The SLWs are noticably larger at 12 weeks that the GLWs and EEs. Some of the reds are almost as big as the biggest SLW. 2 of the EEs are friendly enough to come perch on my arm for a few minutes, as is my SLW roo. The rest of the flock prefers to be on the ground.

I understand Wyandottes are not only good layers, but also good "dual purpose" chickens. I would guess the SLWs are now heavy enough to eat if I were inclined to do that. Their size and their Pea comb makes them more cold hardy than some other breeds. My roosters (1 SLW and 1 EE) are very mellow at 12 weeks. Yet to see how they behave at maturity.

No eggs yet, though some of the pullet's combs are reddening just a bit.

I like my wyandottes. I've got BLRWs, Blue, black and splash plus some SLWs. My Silver laced aren't quite old enough to lay yet, but my BLRWs are good layers and the Blues have gotten better as they've gotten older.

I can tell you about EE's and Australorps. I LOVE my EE!

She is my fav chicken out of my little flock. She likes to be held and carried around the garden, and when when I have a treat in my hand, she's the first to come running over. She has the funniest little voice. It isn't a cluck, it's a trill. All my other chicks grew out of that already. I still think its really cute. If my dad let me have more chickens, they would all be EE's! Now, about my Australorp... well, she is definitely not the smartest chicken ever. Very flighty, and I have to chase her for at least 10 minutes before I can corner her. I think she's a bit retarded. BUT, once you get a hold of her she's quite sweet and doesn't struggle to get out of your grasp. Everyone else on here, as far as I can see, has said that their Australorps are loving and gentle and sweet. Ummmm, not according to my chicken. But every chicken is different, so you could get lucky with Australorps.

Oh, and the reason I haven't talked about egg-laying is because they haven't started yet!

I can't say enough for Australorps. LOVE them to death! They are gorgeous, friendly, GREAT egg layers, and have TONS of personality! My current BA is the best alpha hen anyone could ask for!

EE's are also great! Even though they are mutts, all of mine are great. NONE of them aggressive. The two I hand raised are AMAZING girls, and even the three I bought at the auction are good girls. Most of them are SO calm and collected. Shy, but calm.


Personally, I dont like wyandottes, at all. If you have any docile breed, they will pick on them. All the wyandottes I've had have been aggressive. While they are decent egg layers, and are very pretty, I just dislike the breed for the behavioral issues that I have encountered.

ALSO - forgot to add that they were flighty!


I really think that you would like langshans and brahmas!

I will have to take some updated pictures, but we have Australorps and Easter Eggers. The EE's are one of my favorite breeds, but the Australorps are great also.

The "Lorps" (as we call them) are fairly calm and friendly. We can easily catch them, though they may try to get away. Ours are very vocal. The rooster crows a lot and the girls "talk" a lot when we are nearby. I just posted in another thread that they make this awful sound that is like whining to me when they see me or hear my voice because I am the one who gives them treats. I think it's cute. They are very fluffy, soft, and pretty chickens. Ours are about 4 months old, so we haven't had any eggs yet. My husband's friend has some older ones and he says that they are very good layers of brown eggs. These are my husband's very favorite chickens of all the breeds that we have and I have to admit that I like them too.

My first chicken that was "mine" was an EE. After my husband got the Lorps I had to have some of my own! I got my pet EE and some awful Turkens that tried to smother my EE to death, so I babied her and gave them away. She is my tamest pet chicken now. She will sit with me in the backyard swing, stand up on my shoulder while I'm in the pen (but only if I invite her), etc. She has this cute little way of looking at me out of one eye while cocking her head sideways. I have 3 more younger ones that I bought because I loved this one so much (and more eggs in the incubator). They are all nice, but my first one is my baby. Though all 4 of them looked the same as chicks, every one of them looks a lot different from the others now. I can't say enough about my EEs. Some may call them mutts, but if I had to pick only one breed to keep they would be my 1st choice.

I love this, learning first hand about everyones chickens, it is really giving me an idea of what to expect and what not to.

I am so excited can't wait to see me little ones!
