Wondering about this EE?

It could be a BSL, or it could be an EE. There is NO STANDARD for EE since they are MUTTS. If it lays a green egg, you will then tell everyone it is an EE, but it may just end up laying a brown egg and then you really wouldn't know which it is for sure. I think the important question that homemakerjulie wanted to know is, is this a pullet or cockerel. I think we have a pretty good concensus, it is a pullet.
She looks like a nice, healthy one and you can't complain about that. If you really want a boy for all your girls, I am SURE, beyond a shadow of a doubt that you can find one with little difficulty. Just go to the page of "What is the breed gender" and look for someone in your area who has posted a picture asking "Is this a rooster or hen. Please tell me it is a hen" and there you will find yourself a rooster!

To jvwel417: WOW! I think Bertha's the prettiest black sexlink I've ever seen! Where'd you get her from?

To the original poster: Yours looks like a chicken with some EE background, has a feather pattern similar to my EE hen. But.... should a comb be that bright in an 8 week-old pullet?

It could be a poor quality EE pullet (not that ee's really have a standard...). The coloration is very typical of an EE, but there's no muff/beard and the bird has a straight comb, not a pea comb. If it does have EE in it, it probably won't lay a blue/green egg. Def. a pullet though.

ETA - not a black sex link though either. Where did you get her from?

She came from a Farm and Home, was in the Rainbow Layers tub, which I thought was EE, but then read on here that that is just a random mix of chicks that'll give you different colored eggs! She was black with white tips on her wings, and I think a little white/cream on her belly. I am realizing that all the chicks I have gotten (until this last batch just a week ago after the fox incident!) I didn't have any actual EE, I was so disappointed to not have the blue/green eggs! But that other bunch, not pictured here, has the grey legs and the puffy cheeks. None of these do. I have three that I think are New Hampshires, and a white one that I have no clue, and then two of these that are black with the gold, this one in the picture has more gold, oh, and also a BO, I think you can see her a bit in these last two pictures. I'll try to get some better ones tomorrow in the daylight.

I will have to do that! I don't have to have a rooster, but I do like how a flock is so different (and kinder to each other) with a rooster around. We had our whole laying flock taken by a fox about a week ago, so at the time that I got these I wasn't concerned about having a rooster, and didn't really want one, but now, I think it would be nice.

As for the comb being so red, that's what got me really wondering, but then I have two others that have them that red, but are smaller, they do sit in a window with sun, so maybe the sun? The sun doesn't come straight in at them, nor do they generally sit right there in it, but maybe??? I will try to get a picture in the daylight tomorrow, with her outside the crate (we haven't moved them out since we'll be moving very soon, and the whole fox with baby foxes thing). I'll get some of the others with the redder combs as well.

Thank you all for your help and thoughts

Possibly an EE. I have an EE rooster with no muff and similar legs (he is however blue and red laced) I know he is EE because he was hatched from a green egg. It does look like a Black Sex-Link though. Just wait until she lays then you'll.
