Wondering if cats are ok with free rome chickens?

It's funny watching the cats around the chickens. They stalk the birds but when they get close the bird goes after them and they run. Now dogs are a different story. We have a border collie/beagle. He has killed 2 birds that were outside their run. Just for fun of course. We have a 6ft fence but the birds were flying over. We clipped one wing on each and it took care of the problem. If my wife didn't like the dog so much it would be gone.

We have a stray/abandoned cat that we have adopted. I found her outside around the pens. She gets alot fine with the bids even though the birds get scared of her. She is very good with them except when the fly or jump. It really just depends on the cat. I have an old cat that is 8 and he does not care for anything. They stray getsalong fine with the birds and hunts for the rats at night. He has caught alot of the so far.

I don't have any cats, but there are several feral ones that sometimes stare at my hens when they free range but have never presented a problem. I have heard the hens put up a loud racket and have seen them take on and chase the cats if they get too close.

I would say, as others have, as long as your hens are old enough and big enough, you should have no problems.....

My cat has no interest at all in my chickens. He went after them when they were chicks but we always managed to chase him off. Now that they're bigger, he virtually ignores them. For the first few days, he was mildly curious, but for now they seem to have a peace treaty. My doxies, on the other hand, are responsible for 3 chicken deaths in our back yard.
