won't leave the coop

no one ever said they are the smartest birds out there
Wait until they have finally decided they like to come out and scratch in the yard, enjoy the sunshine but they don't know how to get back in. The door has disappeared and they walk around and around the coop...... lost, usually with me cussing behind them.

Now I have this image of a United States Marine following two month old chickens with a stick! A guiding stick is very useful. Thank you for your service.

I AM planning on putting in a pop door in the coop soon as it warms up again. Supposed to be on the sixties here this weekend. And yea, I have to be mother hen with these birds with everything I do. The farmer down the road a bit has some older hens that are no longer laying he said he would give me a couple of them. He said they have trained his young birds for several years. It's a chicken farm and he raises thousands, mostly friers.

Those hens will probably be pretty hard on your chicks, not to mention feeding non productive hens. Yours will learn as they go. They will be self sufficient soon. I never bring any outside grown chickens on my property.

Well today they finally ventured out of the coop. they spent about 5 housrs in my compost heap turning it over for me. Then the found a nice spot where the dirt was loose and they had a big ole chicken bath, ten to 12 at a time. Soon as they heard me with the grub in the eening they ran right back to the coop.
