Wood ashes

We had a fire last nigh burning wood all the ash is cold the birds have discovery it and have started pecking around at is this ok

They probably won't eat much, and they eat lots of stuff that isn't food. Wood ashes make a great addition to a dust bath, and help controll mites. Can you scatter them where they dust bathe?

Doubt they can peck up much ash, their interest may be bugs in there?
