wood pellets

I have used them for horse stalls for over 10 years. I do wet them if I use them in the chicken coop. I just use the soft wood stove pellets. Or places like Tractor Supply carry an actually horse stall bedding that is pellets or crumbles, but they are usually more expensive and sometimes in 30 lbs bags instead of 40 lb. Feline Pine cat litter is also the same thing.

Tractor Supply or most any feed store that carries stuff for horses. Name brands off the top of my head are Woody Pet (usually for small animals), Equine Fresh (my absolute favorite), Eagle something (the one I actually use! LOL), and Lone Star Bedding. The Lone Star happens to be the most dusty stuff I have used, but it still absorbs.

I use Woody Pet for my chickens, turkeys and horses. Love it. I do mist it down to expand it and haven't had any trouble with anyone eating it. I do start my baby chicks on newspaper and only go to Woody Pet after they're a few weeks old.

I'd like to know more about deep litter with Woody Pet. The packaging recommends no more than 3/4" of bedding for poultry, so ???

It's getting COLD here in Maine and time for more insulation under the feet, methinks! Can anyone point me to good reading? Thanks!

The only reason you would need to put baby chicks on paper towels for a day or so is to get them started eating by scattering the feed on the towels. I actually never use paper towels, but a sheet of newspaper for just a few hours. as soon as they have found the feeder it's removed, and they go directly on the pellets.

how deep do you keep them and how do you clean the poop?

my coop is an overglorified rabbit hutch so i thought i would scoop weekly...

now with shavings i end up completey stripping once a month and start over again.

i really wanted to try the pellets, becuz i use them in my horse stall and LOVE them!

i hope to eliminate smell and i think they are cost effective.
