Wood shavings

I got some wood shavings for the nest boxes, got 'em from Silva's, a good friendly place, but ultimately, I think Tractor Supply will be my place to get them.

The result is, clean eggs!

Straw is "traditional" but so far, I'm very happy with wood shavings.
 
That's what I use, and I agree with you. I think it's also easier for the hens to get the nest to be "just so" with the shavings, just the way they like it before they settle in to lay.

By the way, I noticed you're in Gilroy. One year when we were on vacation we passed through Gilroy just after the garlic festival and bought some fresh harvest garlic. Oh, my! I've never had such wonderful garlic in my life. Heavenly. The whole family went into mourning when we at the last clove of that five pound batch.
 
Our girls have their butt spots grooved into the shavings,making them"just so" for egg laying.
