hello, waiting for our vet to open . We had a huge run built for our girls .. the contractor spilled stain in a grassy area and did not cover it or let us know and our chickens free range with supervision. As soon as he left last night we found our favorite girl drenched in what we thought was blood , but it was stain .. she had it all under her wing and on her side . We bathed her and watched much of it out , she still smells and while we kept her indoors and warm. She is breathing fine and pooping / eating . After bathing , she seems to not stand well , wobbly is a good term . We thought because she was so wet and heavy , but now I am not sure, I would feel better knowing a soaked chicken may seem a bit off balance . I found the large stain spill in the grass , looks like she laid down to sun bathe and that is how it got on her . Any information / ideas would be appreciated . We are beyond upset that we were not told if this spill, or that it was not even covered up as they knew the hens free range . Our main concern is our girl however . Thanks in advance !

You have a real medical emergency on your hands. Time is of the essence to try to treat this hen before permanent brain damage from petroleum distillates sets in, and even death. I'd think about suing that contractor.

Get some activated charcoal from the pharmacy where the vitamins are shelved. Give her one whole capsule, followed by plenty of water.

Follow that up with a molasses flush, a teaspoon in a fourth cup of water. Place her somewhere where the poop mess won't matter. Later tonight, begin vitamin E 400iu therapy with boiled egg, each day for the next week.

Symptoms of poisoning are inability to stand, balance, or walk. Leg paralysis usually sets in, and death may follow. Hopefully, you can neutralize enough of the toxin to safe her life.

Clean up the spill by removing all contaminated soil and grass down to inches below the surface, then covering with fresh soil. Not even one grain of dirt or gravel must remain as one piece of grit can work significant damage.
