Hi im from woodbridge nj.I read on the township land use ordinance that you can keep chickens if you get a permit. Its 10.00 and revokable at the discretion of the township. It looks like they need to come out to my house and deem the land suitable.Im hoping i dont need to have eveyything ready.I would hate to pay 300 for supplies and coop to only be turned down.Does anyone else have any advice or has tried to do this here before?

Did you call the zoning board? I'm starting to try to get the laws in my township changed to allow back yard chickens and it all goes through my zoning board.

Hi, I live in Woodbridge and I have been looking into getting chickens. Did you ever get your chickens?

All I read about is getting an exemption, but I do not see any information on how to apply for an exemption in Woodbridge Township NJ. Does anyone know how to go about this? The ordinance also states that you can not own non domesticated chickens, but aren’t chickens domesticated?

This is what the ordinance states:

No person shall maintain, keep or harbor on any interior or exterior premises in the Township any cattle, rabbits, sheep, goats, ducks, swine, horses, chickens or similar nondomesticated animals or fowl, excluding pigeons. The Department of Health and Human Services of the Township of Woodbridge may consider and review, in its sole discretion, certain requests for a special permit waiving the permit holder from compliance with this subsection. Moreover, no permit shall be issued until it has been determined by the Department of Health and Human Services, upon inspection and review of other information that the Department deems necessary and appropriate, that such place and premises are suitable for the housing of the animals. A permit shall be revoked if, by virtue of a subsequent inspection, it has been determined that the premises have not been kept in a sanitary condition and/or that the premises are not suitable for maintaining the good health of the animal in question. A permit issued under this subsection shall be renewed annually on or before January 1 in each year and revoked at the discretion of the Department. The fee for the permit shall be thirty-five ($35.00) dollars annually.

I also live and Woodbridge and am also looking into this. I’m not ready for chickens this year but I’m hoping to try and request an exemption. If you manage to do this successfully I’d appreciate it if you can post an update. So unfortunate that there is a restriction altogether instead of having requirements to be upheld. I hope you manage to get the exemption.

They still have requirements even if you get an exemption. My grandparents had chickens in their backyard before the ordinance was changed in 1974.

Oh of course i mean instead of having ordinances denying certain residents from having backyard Chickens it would be nice if they rather trusted that residents follow the requirements. Especially as I see towns that allow people with tiny yards to have chicken coops right next to their homes. 🤷‍♀️

Woodbridge Township Ordinance for obtaining a chicken permit. So, I received the Procedures for Obtaining a Chicken Permit paperwork and the permit application. I started checking items off of my list as I began the process, however, I did not get very far. So, according to the ordinance you are allowed 5 hens in Woodbridge Township providing you pay $35.00 for the permit and follow all the procedures in the guidelines. First thing, obtain approval from the Zoning Board. Well, let me tell you, this is not happening because the Zoning board officer said, “you will never be allowed a coop in Woodbridge Township Ever.” Ok, so what are my chickens supposed to live in and how can you apply for a permit if you’re chickens have no place to live? I am at wits end! Where do I go from here? I will fight to have my chickens but I have never dealt with this kind of stuff before. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. These are the guidelines, which really do not make much sense.

Hi, how long have you been in the Township? Would you join me in trying to change the ordinance from an exemption to an actual plan? Do you know of anyone else in the Township that would like to have chickens?
