Woodchuck extraviganza!

Groundhogs are one of the most destructive creatures on earth!

We have tried and tried to get rid of the ones around us. They have dug tunnels underneath the concrete floor in our barn and we're afraid someday the floor will just collapse. You wouldn't believe the amount of gravel they have moved out from under it.

DH has tried everything including smoke bombs, ammonia and chlorine mixed together and poured down into the hole, trapping, shooting at them from the house (because if you get any closer, they hightail it). We have electric fence wire around the garden and they just go through it like it's not even there! I told him he's gonna have to put on his best hunting camo and wait for him to appear. Next year we're building an enclosed fence around the garden! Maybe this summer if he has time.

we finially got rid of all but a couple by dropping a rodent bomb in the hole and covering the hole in February before they woke from hibernation. I think this still might work at night when they go in. Its very hard to get rid of them all, they are smarter than you think. My son has it down the an art, he sits completely still till they come out or he hides in the garage and shoots out the window. They are most active in the am. But as for shooting them, they are tough. He has already shot one 3 times and it still didnt die. They didnt bother my garden last year even though they lived 6 feet away, its the tunnels under my sheds that upset me. But this spring the rabbits moved into the abandoned holes...........

they wont fight unless they are cornered or sick. but if they do watch out, weve had quite a few dogs who asked for it. I was told by someone that they dont get rabies but Ive certainly seen what looks like rabies. My dad always said to hit them on the road, especially if they came at the car.

Almost all of the time animals that "look like they have rabies" actually have distemper or something else. But woodchucks do get rabies, and are the only rodents to considered to be a reservoir of it. (If I'm remembering correctly a paper I did back in my biology major days.)
