Ok so 17 baby chicks in my living room is just about too much for me. I love them and would love them even more if I didn't have to smell them every day I get home. We live in western ky and it will be getting warm before long. So I am wanting to make a brooder for outside. It will be in the carport. Does anyone have any good ideas or suggestions for me before I start building? Thanks for the help.

Yes something I can use in the future. They are starting to get out of what I have now which is just a rubbermaid tote. I want them to stay safe and warm but not in the living room. I plan on hatching more chicks soon so I want to get something bigger and not in the living room. If I had another room to put them in I would but that is not an option. I want them at least another month older before they go to the coop with the big kids.

Just a suggestion. If your chicks are 4 to 6 weeks old why would you build a brooder when they can go out into a coop. Most 4 week old are capable of faring well outside as long as you have a bit of light to keep them calm. If you are sure you want to build a brooder then I suggest looking at the one on the coops design here on BYC. Great looking wooden box with the hardware cloth and space to put in a heat lamp. Wish you the best.

Well I have a few reasons I want to build a brooder. I have a rooster that has been acting up lately. Also the weather in ky is very unpredictable one day its 80 the next day 50. This is something I will use every spring. Thanks for letting me know about the brooders under the coops link.
