Woods Coop Complete...mostly

I suppose you'll cover that tight come winter?
No. You'll notice there is a door on the outside as well. It is a glass door so its not as easy to see in the picture. I figured a glass door on the south east face should work nicely for some afternoon sun come winter.

Ah, yes, DOH!.... I see it now.

Are windows necessary in a woods coop?
In summer, when you want more air flow, yes.
In winter you close them all except the big one in lower front,
which stops flow thru (creates and air cushion) but still gives good air exchange.

Right. These coops need to be pretty tight. The soffits need to be seams from wall to roof and the windows relatively sealed. Mainly want to eliminate draft. That being said, it is a chicken coop so don't get carried away. You are trying to contain ventilation. I will say though, it has been 95 degrees here and the girls are doing pretty well. The coops vents well in the summer. Curios to see how winter goes. -30 degrees is pretty cold for an open front coop, which are temps we can see around here during winter.

-30 degrees
Guess it doesn't really matter whether that's C or F...but curious:
Where in this world are you located?
Climate, and time of year, is almost always a factor.
Please add your general geographical location to your profile.
It's easy to do, (laptop version shown), then it's always there!

Done. NW Illinois. Temperatures were brutally cold last winter. As you can see in the picture, there is plenty of cover from the wind with the trees to the North. Still, -30 F a couple of times is just cold. I may have to cover the front with a sheet of plywood or something during those few periods.

All,

Finally completed my 8X14 woods coop. I am pretty happy with it. I think it is positioned to last 30 years or more. Wanted to share some pics. Thanks to all of your input here. It was pivotal in building a good product. I still need to build some steps into the coop and the nesting boxes which I am working on.

The girls (and boy) are pretty happy with it. I need to build a ramp to the roost and a poop board. My silkies are still a bit young and are in a small upside down rabbit cage. The others are becoming familiar with them. Just takes a little time. As you can see my lab is extremely curious.

Enjoy!

Chris
