Woods-style house in the winter

The weather here this winter has been all over the map. We've had rain, snow, ice. Had temps from the 50s in the afternoon, dropping to 4, with wind chill said to be 20-30 below. All through that, my birds have had ZERO problems. No frostbite, None of them have fell off the roost frozen into a chickensicle. A bunch of them went through a molt, again no problems. They spent a week in the coop after one snowfall. The popdoor was opened, they just chose to stay in. They really don't like walking in snow. Some eventually came out, others waited until the snow was practically gone.

Great news. I start the build in March. Placing my orders for birds... Chanteclers, Bielefelders, Austalorps & some heritage turkeys. Might build an open air house for the turkeys too.

-18 for two nights in a row, highs right around 0 for three days. Chickens aren't thrilled, but no frostbite!

Roosts are 30" high. More inside pics of the coop are on pg4 of this thread.

I am going to suggest that you get a copy of Dr. Woods book, It is very helpful, and is available on-line. My Woods coop is 6 x 10. There is a ratio to be maintained between the width and depth of the coop to create correct draft and air movement.

THank you for that suggestion. THe outside is set, the inside left some thought as to set up.
