World rooster adopted us

My wife has been talking about getting a couple hENS and a small roost by our garage for a long time. Maybe we will now. Years ago,We used to have a couple when we lived on the hillside in Lani Kai < but they disappeared> Neighborhood dogs may have gotten them. The domesticated ones may not have the same instincts bred into them as the feral ones>.
That is probably very true!

Wild rooster adopted us:
So here’s my story and why I joined the forum: I am a Dr. in Hawaii, Largely retired upon becoming quadriplegic 2 1/2 years ago. Now, I spend what time I can on our lawn Facing Kailua Beach.I don’t know if any of you know this, but Hawaii has developed quite the feral chicken population on all islands, almost to the point of becoming an issue. There’s a good size one at Kalama Beach Park a quarter-mile down the beach from me. Not quite a year ago, a young rooster started showing up in our yard. I would talk to it, And it would seem to listen. It became a very frequent thing for it to show up during the daytime, probably encouraged by the fact that we’d feed it crumbs and popcorn etc.. Eventually, he Started to sidle up to me and make gentle clucking noises, and I got the feeling it wanted to hop up on my knees. Eventually he did, and eventually it started to enjoy being petted, groomed, and otherwise caressed (I have partial use of one hand, but no sensation at all, alas). Since then, he has really come into himself, gaining weight, plumage, and long spurs, Probably helped by our supplementing his diet. Likely, he’s pretty capable among other roosters. He always goes home at night but is often back to wake us up in the morning (something we could do without BTW). It seems surprising that he doesn’t spend more time with his flock ( and hens!) Down the beach. Our relationship seems to have changed a bit lately, possibly progressing to a relationship of male good buddy. In that, sometimes when he jumps up, he wants to peck me and seems to enjoy when I fight him back by grabbing his beak or flicking it. He still likes to beCaressed most of the time, though.

So that’s my story. More later I guess, and with pictures.
Does my heart good to hear that story. Feels special when the animals pick you. You start to look for them and wonder if there no there on time. My 4 inch tall wood duck just showed up in the driveway and i picked him up. Then later after i was trained he adopted a cat.at first i was afraid she would eat him but after watching them like a hawk i realized if she was gonna eat him she woulda already and she became his bodygaurd. Im not lucky at all but im amazingly lucky. Grateful. Aloha

Such a handsome rooster! Great story behind him, too. He'll probably stay a while, even if you don't get him any hens -- treats have incredible power like that.
WILD Rooster adopted us

(At My original post, the voice to text printed world instead of Wild. I haven’t been able to figure out how to change it)

Obviously, it’s been a long time since I’ve updated this thread. I will get into the reason for the delay at the end. Just to update you from what I wrote above, a very young wild rooster from a colony about a quarter mile from our kailua beachfront home adapted a quadriplegic doctor (Me) in his wheelchair. (Thus, The name we gave him “Roman Rooster”. Get it?Roaming rooster!)

I don’t think I explained well enough how young the rooster was When He his first started coming around. He hadn’t yet grown large spurs and most importantly, he didn’t crow! We didn’t know at the time that it was because he was too young. We would see him occasionally make these weak little attempts at a crow. We thought it was cute and felt ourselves lucky that he did not do obnoxious crowing all the time. It wasn’t long before we learned he was still maturing.
The attached picture is I think the earliest we ever took of him. He's already gotten bigger than most of the wild ones. his Spurs are only beginning to develop
