My Marian’s hasn’t been laying regularly and she was in the nest box at roosting time. I brought her out thinking she might be broody and I found this hanging off of her bottom. It’s the size of a pinky finger and hollow with some clear liquid coming out.if it is a worm what would I use to treat?

It looks like a tail, which is part of an abnormal egg. Sometimes when they are having a glitch in the reproductive cycle, they may pass shell-less eggs or eggs with a tail as seen in this picture below. If it happens again or she has any shell-less eggs, you could try giving human calcium citrate with vitamin D for a few days to see if it helps. Is she getting close to her yearly molt, or showing any signs of illness?

Yes she’s close to her molt I see some black feathers that could be hers on the coop floor. That’s exactly what it looked like the tail part of that egg. I will give her some calcium n vitamin D. Thank you for the picture.

My hen that is 11/2 years old laid one of these yesterday and had no yoke in it. The other day she laid a fairy sized shell less with no yoke. I have treated her with the calcium citrate w/d3 last year and was only a temporary fix. When she lays a shelled egg she seems to suffer before and after do to the size of the eggs (huge). Thinking back I only got 2 normal eggs from her in the last 3 months (only white egg layer).

Are you going to repeat giving her calcium with D? I would give it for 7 days at a dosage of 300-600 mg of calcium daily. Does she get a layer feed and have crushed oyster shell available for extra calcium? She may be suffering a calcium deficiency, but salpingitis or coming to the end of her laying cycle before a molt might be a problem.

I was under the impression the calcium with d3 was a 1 time try. Yes layer feed and oyster shell on the side. I figure she has salpingitis, she has had issues with lash eggs also. Since she has been old enough to lay I bet I've only got a dozen shelled eggs from her and 2/3rds of those were huge and seems to really affect her before and after she lays.
