worm, cold, cocci, anit-biotics; NOW, or even after sickness sets in?

I have had 4 chickens for about 3 months now. One mixed game/feral (Possibly with some Delaware), One bantam (of some kind or another) and two Ameraucanas. The mixed was probably a couple months old when the hawk deposited her in my yard. I was told the Ameraucanas were 2 months old when I got them 3 months ago.

One of my Ameraucanas, the larger of the 2, just starting moping around yesterday. Does not want to scratch and peck like the others, and stands around with her tail down. She is not fluffing up her feathers. Does not have discharge from nostrils nor eyes. Does not have any skin problems that I can detect. I read where birds sometimes get this way when they first get broody, but I am thinking she still might be a bit young for this. The guy at the feed store (who does not seem to know much about chickens) says it might be worms, but I don't see any in her droppings. I do have her sequestered in a dark room on a heating pad with water and food and she has settled into just sitting quietly. I did see that the feed store has all kinds of food and water supplements for worms, cold, cocci, and anti-biotics.

question; if I have not already been treating my chickens with any of these, will it do any good for this one chicken once she starts having problems? can I administer all of these "remedies" at once to her? to the others? or should one be done then the next etc.

I am thinking maybe giving her some worm medicine and/or anti-biotics now might be a good thing.

I would greatly appreciate anyone else's success stories which started out with similar symptoms...or any other insights or advise. Thanks much.

I would not give her those meds unless she shows signs of having the sickness that they're made for.
She shows no sign of resp. infection...No blood in her stool to indicate cocci? (though I've heard that it's possible not to show blood (rare)) Pretty young to have developed large quantaties of worms....Have you checked your birds, one and all, for mites?
She's at the age where she should be starting to lay and if something is wrong with her reproductive works it may show now. You're doing exactly what I would do as well as give her yogurt and boiled eggs and maybe some ACV in her water. Good luck and keep us posted.

Thanks for the insight.

I think I will hold off on most everything for now. She got worse since my first post, and I finally read a article describing EXACTLY every symptom that she had, and I am convinced of the coccidiosis.

After 4 hours of research, the consensus seems to be that CORID works best, quickest. 2 teaspoons in a gallon of water, and 24 hours later and she is skipping and singing; and do I feel better!

I will keep it in the water for maybe a week...

She never did show blood in the droppings, but I might have caught it early enough not to have gotten to that development.

I have read that by the time blood starts showing you only have a matter of hours to do something about turning it around...

The CORID is the bomb. Thing is, it looks like I will have a TON of it on hand for awhile. I am wondering if it will keep....

Thanks again.

Instructions for Corid: 6ml Corid in 1 litre (quart) water for 7 days
Then 1.5ml corid in 1 litre of water for 2 weeks

I put my meds in the frig. Really happy all is working for you!

OK, with the Corid, I put 2 tablespoons in a gallon of water. Is that right?? I am not real good with milliters, etc so I thought that was right. I have it in the water now. I also have some 7-10 week olds and I noticed 1 or more to have bloody stools, not a lot of blood, maybe blood tinged would be a better way to describe it. Cleaned out the brooder box, new shavings, water changed 2X day. Hope that works.

I never measured by spoon but an ml is the same as a cc so if you have a syringe you can measure that way.

I have read that the ml wroks out to be about 2 TEA spoons not TABLE spoons.... per gallon .... TEA spoons

All tails are up and scratching is back to normal.
