Worm in an egg

Recently we discovered a worm in an egg. A week prior, we found an egg with what appeared to be blood on the exterior of the shell. I believe we have roundworms in the flock now. Is it still safe to eat the eggs from the hens if we decide to treat with DE? Is it safe to eat the eggs if we do not treat? Is it possible that we as humans can contract roundworm from the poultry, and how would that affect us if it is possible?

I would not eat an egg with worms in it. De-worm you chickens ASAP! If you are seeing worms, they are terribly infected and sick. Yes, you can get roundworms from your pets.

PS..yes you can eat eggs from hens that eat DE. I doubt DE will take care of the problem at this point, it's more of a preventative, IMO.

If you already have a worm infestation, you may want to administer a worming medication. I have found DE more of a preventive than a treatment, and you need something that will work right away.

I do not have information on whether humans can get roundworm from poultry, but perhaps someone else can add info on this.

I give my chickens 1.5 cc injectable ivermectin in one gallon of water twice a year.

are you really sure it was worms? Take a look at the above webpage which has pics of roundworms in eggs.

Other foreign objects in eggs may have been embronic development, meat/blood spots, etc...

Based on the research I have completed thus far, I am pretty positive that it is roundworm. I cannot find any information on the ramifications of human ingestion of eggs from infected chickens though. All the help is greatly appreciated!

Gross! De-worm them and wait the minimum weeks before eating the eggs. I don't know about round worms from chicken to human, but round worms from dog to human can be pretty serious. So why take any chances?
