We’ve had hens for 8 years and I’ve never seen this in an egg. Could this be a worm?

Intestinal worms have segments. Did you ever see the "Dune" movies? While an occasional worm can find its way up the oviduct (rare), this is not a worm. As my friend @dawg53 says, it's a strand of chalaza, that curious appendage in the raw egg that stabilizes the yolk during the development of a chick embryo.
