Wormer help

I had a hard time finding it myself. In a small town near me there is a store that used to be Agway. It's pretty much the same only the name is different. They carried it. Maybe, look for someplace like that or you can order it through different sites.

Administer orally undiluted using a syringe without a needle. Dosage is 1/2cc for standards, 1/4cc for smaller birds. Redose again in 10 days. There's a 14 day withdrawal period after the last dosing. Pull the wattles down and the mouth will open. Squirt the liquid in the mouth and immediately release the wattles so's the bird can swallow the liquid on its own. Release the bird, go on to the next bird and so on.

Thanks for your reply Sunshine. I thought it should be just one dose for 6 months, I guess I got confused with all the posts etc. I have read everything on wormers from posts that led to another etc.. Thank you for reminding me of the doseage, I sure do not want to hurt my chicken-kids!

I have another question, should I see any dead worms in the droppings? I have not seen any at all, but before the dosage I did see dead worms three times a few days apart. (which I am pretty sure was from one chicken) I have been anxious because of the posts about worm overload and the birds dying. Also, when I used the Ivomec before, the dosage suggested to me for mite/lice control and prevention was every 3 months, 1-2 drops on the back of the neck. We ate the eggs with no problems after that. With the suggested forum dosage of 2 1/2 ml for grown banties (I used 1 1/2 ml for the 13 wk olds) this would be more than the drops I used for insects, I am assuming (I know you should never assume) the eggs are still safe to eat. Until I get some feedback on this I have kept the post-dosage eggs separate. Wow, who said raising pet chickens is easy??? Thank God for BYC forums and the Gurus willing to help us out!

Thanks to everyone for your help and caring, I really do appreciate every reply.

I don't use that much of the ivomec...just 1/4 cc for itty bittys and 1/2 for larger and I still eat the eggs...but I would not give them to other people or children. I know that I am not sensitive to ivermectin but you never know who may be.

That sounds like a pretty high dose of wormer to me. We use 1/2 cc (same as mL) when we deworm. Because it is a systemic drug, you may want to cut back to only 2x a year. In the meantime, some plain old Sevin dust is great for mites and feather lice if you see any on your birds. You don't cut it with DE or anything--Sevin dust is carbaryl cut with DE already. Get the shaker top containers and flip the bird upside down and get the dust under the feathers. At the same time, dust the perches and nestboxes. You only need to worry about it when you actually see signs of the creepy crawlies, however. Feather lice are particularly easy to see. I'm always so thankful that feather mites and feather lice are species-specific and they can't live on me!

As far as dead worms, you might see them and you might not. It depends a great deal on how large any worms are and how fresh the droppings are. The worms dry out fairly quickly and get very difficult to see. Also, if you're worming on a regular schedule, the parasite load shouldn't be big enough that you'll see a lot of worms in the droppings. That's kind of the point--by worming on a regular schedule there are never enough parasites in the birds to cause a problem.
